This time I got maybe two minutes of uninterrupted meditation before someone else approached.<\/p>\n

“Question about your counter-striking timing\u2060\u2014” I opened my eyes to see a third person. This was getting ridiculous. “No,” I said firmly. “I’m meditating. We all are. You can see that we’re meditating. Please leave us alone until we’re finished.” “But I just need to know\u2060\u2014” “Master Zhou. Eastern training yard. He answers questions. I’m meditating.” The person finally left. I could hear the practice circle starting to get frustrated. Wei was sighing. Lin’s breathing was slightly irregular from irritation.<\/p>\n

Chen was radiating the kind of tension that suggested he was about to say something rude to the next person who interrupted. I closed my eyes again and tried to focus. Four seconds in. Hold for seven\u2060\u2014 “I have a question about qi efficiency\u2060\u2014” “No!” all twelve of us said simultaneously.<\/p>\n

The would-be questioner stumbled backward, startled by the collective rejection. “We’re meditating!” Kai added with obvious frustration. “Does nobody here understand what meditation looks like?” “You could just answer quickly,” someone else called from the crowd. “It’s not that hard to help people.” “It’s extremely hard to help people while actively trying to cultivate,” Mei replied.<\/p>\n

“Come back when we’re done.” “When will you be done?” another voice asked. “In about three hours if people stop interrupting us every thirty seconds,” I said. That finally got some of the crowd to disperse, but at least fifteen people remained, waiting for us to finish so they could ask questions. I tried to meditate with an audience staring at us. It was deeply uncomfortable and completely destroyed my concentration. Every time I started making progress on the blockage, I’d feel someone’s attention and lose focus.<\/p>\n

After forty-five minutes of struggling, I gave up. This wasn’t working. “We need to find somewhere else to train,” I said to the practice circle. “This isn’t sustainable.” “Where else can we go?”<\/p>\n

Sometimes it looked red or white, depending on the light and what I needed from it. Tonight it was the color of finality. The color you see when your eyelids weigh a hundred pounds and something’s pulling from the inside. It was my birthday, which made it worse somehow. I’d bought pizza because birthdays needed pizza even when nobody came.<\/p>\n

Three slices were gone, but I couldn’t remember eating them. The box sat open on the table, the grease bleeding into the cardboard like a signature I didn’t sign. There were other balloons too\u2026 not just my balloon. Party City sold them cheap. I’d told the girl at the counter they were for my nephew, but she didn’t care enough to look at me. She tied them with curling ribbon and smiled like it was just a transaction, which I suppose it was.<\/p>\n

The bundle leaned against the far wall now, sagging already, embarrassed to be here. One of them had slipped free. That was the black one. It hovered in the corner near the ceiling, bumping against the texture, moving just enough to prove air still existed. I liked watching it. It was honest. It didn’t make promises.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
