We had found the antichrist candidate, we had, at great risk, managed to kill him, and then Tank had done what Tank always does. He loved. He healed. He made Ambrosi Giacomo whole. I blew out a breath and went back to the computer. We had been tracking Giacomo, the Gate\u2019s \u201cbig bad\u201d for this genera- tion, and our system had worked well enough for us to intercept him at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.<\/p>\n

But now the Gate had to be aware that we were onto their plan, so we needed to try a new tactic. But what? I pressed my hands to my forehead and closed my eyes. For a split second, I wished the professor was with me\u2014he had always been able to remind me of principles I tended to forget \u2014but he was tripping the light fantastic in some other dimen- sion, having left us because he assumed we were capable enough to handle the Gate on our own.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t make assumptions, Professor.\u201d I lifted my head at sudden burst of insight\u2014not from thinking of the professor, but from remembering something Tank often said: A good defense is great, but a good offense is better. We needed to go on the offense. We needed to move the ball into the enemy\u2019s part of the court\u2014er, field. We needed to sack their quarterback. We needed to take out their cheer- leaders and support staff. We needed to\u2014 I stopped, having exhausted my knowledge of football.<\/p>\n

If I got stuck, I could always call Tank and ask for more metaphors. In the mean time\u2014I gathered up the scribbled pages of notes on the table\u2014I would get back to work and look for some- thing to help us turn this game around. BIkLeMYERS They all came looking for me.<\/p>\n

Instead of the longer novel format, we wanted to write something equally as engaging but that could be read in one or two sittings\u2014on the plane, waiting to pick up the kids from soccer, or as an evening\u2019s read. We also wanted to play. As friends and seasoned novelists, we thought it would be fun to create a game we could partici- pate in together.<\/p>\n

The rules were simple: Rule #1 Each of us would write as if we were one of the characters in the series: 4 INTRODUCTION Bill Myers would write as Brenda, the street-hustling tattoo artist who sees images of the future. Frank Peretti would write as the professor, the atheist ex- priest ruled by logic. Jeff Gerke would write as Chad, the mind reader with devastating good looks and an arrogance to match.<\/p>\n

Angela Hunt would write as Andi, the brilliant-but-geeky young woman who sees inexplicable patterns. Alton Gansky would write as Tank, the naive, big-hearted jock with a surprising connection toa healing power.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
