No, instead of the perfectly bland folk tale, this particular tale was of the more romantic variety. Nothing lurid, but definitely not something she was comfortable reading alongside Benedict. She knew\u2014she knew\u2014it had been a bad idea to trust Benedict with bringing the books to the reading. But he\u2019d insisted, and she\u2019d caved despite that niggling in her stomach, and now here they were.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d she hissed through her stiff smile and tapped the book\u2019s cover. \u201cThis isn\u2019t the book we agreed on.\u201d Benedict smirked, the expression glinting in his deep blue eyes. \u201cBut this one is better. The one we picked was boring.\u201d Boring was good. Boring didn\u2019t have her spouting romantic lines while gazing into those too blue eyes and too handsome face. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t want to disappoint the audience.\u201d Benedict leaned closer to her, his breath a whisper against her hair. \u201cThey\u2019re getting restless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, a few shouts and jeers were hurled at them from the crowd. If they didn\u2019t get on with it, then the heckling wasn\u2019t the only thing they\u2019d hurl. Rotten fruit could be next. \u201cI\u2019ll get you for this.\u201d Beatrice gritted her teeth and glared at him, even as she tried to keep a pleasant smile in place for the audience\u2019s benefit.<\/p>\n

His teasing grin remained in place as he flipped his copy open. \u201cI\u2019ve marked the page where we\u2019ll start.\u201d So that was how it was going to be. Fine. Two could play this game. She\u2019d go along with him for now and read this book. But he\u2019d better watch out.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d get what was coming to him. After all, she had years of practice with this war. Beatrice snapped open her book to the marked page, the words blurring with her rage. She had to blink several times to bring the lines into focus. Benedict read first, his voice ringing with confidence over the crowd. \u201cLethario strode toward her, his blade bloody, his skin glowing with the luminescent sheen of battle.\u201d<\/p>\n

How Benedict managed to read that with a straight face, Beatrice didn\u2019t know. She barely kept herself from rolling her eyes. \u201cHe swept up his love, the ethereal Eudoria, and held her in his tender embrace.\u201d Benedict stepped closer, crowding her. At least he wasn\u2019t so presumptuous as to put an arm around her. \u201cAs he held her so tenderly and sweetly, he whispered in her ear, \u2018The battle is done. My duty to my king is fulfilled.<\/p>\n
