The two women wore feathered headdresses, chokers, and short, dark, ruffled tutus that matched their bodices. Briefly, Eglevsky crouched behind them as they crossed the stage. He walked with comically bent legs while holding onto their skirts, a balletic Groucho Marx. That was a gesture that Balanchine may have gotten from Ruthanna Boris, who had one of the Ends in Cakewalk dancing a bent-over series of steps, while clutching the tail of the other\u2019s coat.<\/p>\n

Le Clercq and Adams took turns performing combinations\u2014fouett\u00e9es, entrechats, and pirouettes\u2014each one pausing to watch the other, as if showing off or trying to match each other. They did a complicated series of attitudes (like arabesques, but with the raised leg bent), swayed from side to side, and stirred the air with one free foot spiraling in corkscrew fashion, all the while maintaining balance on pointe. Diana kept a solemn face throughout, even when, with one leg way up to one side, she was finally carried offstage by Eglevsky.<\/p>\n

When he returned and lifted Tanny in the identical grand battement \u00e0 la seconde position, her leg as high as a leg to the side could possibly go, she managed, just before he carried her off, to take a few seconds to pantomime powdering her nose and waving at the audience with prissy flickers of her wrists.<\/p>\n

The critics were moderately enthusiastic, although a British reviewer noted that \u201cthe choreographer performed the considerable feat of making three top ranking artists . . . look ridiculous. Karinska\u2019s costumes for the girls were delicious.\u201d50 The wedding had a far greater impact than the ballet. The ceremony was secular, performed by a friend of Tanny\u2019s family, a Long Island justice of the peace.<\/p>\n
