There was no noise coming from inside, which worried Elizabeth. What if they already left? What if it was too late? OceanofPDF.com lizabeth felt that they should approach the situation with caution, but Darcy had no intention of waiting. He raised his fist to knock on the door in fury, but Lizzy took hold of his arm to stop him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not approach them in anger. If you frighten them before Wickham has even opened the door, they may not open it at all.\u201d For a moment, Mr. Darcy looked as if he would not heed Elizabeth\u2019s advice. Then, he took a breath, and knocked on the door with a gentle hand. At first, nothing happened. There was no answer from inside. Finally, after a second knock, the door swung open, and Lydia was standing on the other side.<\/p>\n

In the seconds before she realized who was there, she appeared as joyous as a new bride. But then, she saw Elizabeth, and she attempted to close the door again with haste. \u201cDo not dare close that door, Lydia Bennet,\u201d Lizzy said, blocking the door with her foot. \u201cYou will let us pass.\u201d Lydia glanced behind her, then turned back and glared at her sister.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just want to ruin this because you are unhappy. George and I are to be married. You will see. And then I will be more respectable than all of you.\u201d Elizabeth suppressed the urge to give her sister the slap she deserved. Instead, Darcy, detecting the distress that formed between the sisters, pushed the door open in spite of Lydia\u2019s feeble attempts to stop him.<\/p>\n

When they got in the room, they discovered Wickham, already packing his bags, as if he intended to climb out the window while Lydia was engaged with Lizzy. The terror on his face only enraged Elizabeth further. The scoundrel did not have the courage to stay and face the consequences of his horrible behavior. Darcy took a step toward him, which caused Wickham\u2019s cheeks to turn pink from fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd where do you think you are going, George? Did you intend to leave this young woman behind and escape the results of your actions?\u201d Even Lydia looked betrayed. \u201cGeorgie, dear. Were you really going to leave me?\u201d Wickham gave a nervous laugh. \u201cOf course not, dear. I was\u2026 just packing our bags for the trip back to Meryton.<\/p>\n

I thought I would hurry things along, my love.\u201d Elizabeth sighed in relief. \u201cYou have not married yet, then? There is still time?\u201d Lydia\u2019s brow furrowed. \u201cTime to what? Lizzy, you will not change my mind. I love George and he has promised he will marry me.\u201d<\/p>\n

When her aunt and uncle had arrived on Mr. Darcy\u2019s estate, quite unexpectedly, Lizzy had taken comfort in the fact that the gentleman of the house was not meant to be present. But then, much to everyone\u2019s great astonishment, Darcy had appeared. And in spite his past, arrogant behavior, he had been every bit the consummate host for the duration of their stay. The gentleman had given Lizzy and her family a tour of his grand estate, and when they had been alone, he had spoken to her with great kindness and humility.<\/p>\n

In spite of her previous feelings towards him, she found herself taken with Darcy, much to her own complete surprise. For the whole of their carriage ride back to their inn in Lambton, the Gardiners and Elizabeth had been able to discuss little more than the impressive grounds of Pemberley, as well as their most gracious host. \u201cI must say, when we were in Meryton, we heard so many rumors of Mr. Darcy\u2019s haughty and impertinent behavior.<\/p>\n

But the man we met today was nothing like that! He was a true gentleman, exactly the kind you would expect to be the master of place like Pemberley,\u201d Aunt Gardiner said. \u201cQuite right, my dear. And his household seemed to admire him so. There is no question; the young lady who is lucky enough to become mistress of Pemberley will live a charmed life, indeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elizabeth said nothing for the remainder of their ride back to their inn in Lambton, for she was afraid that if she did, she might say something that would prove regretful.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
