She was middle-aged, slight, breathing shallowly. Her clothes were slashed, exposing her stomach and the white cotton brassiere, all spattered with her blood. She\u2019d been marked: among the slashes on her face was a tic-tac-toe game. The Xs won. And on her belly, crudely inscribed in block letters, the word liar.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoly God,\u201d someone murmured. \u201cWhere\u2019s the ambulance?\u201d Daredevil asked. A babble of voices rose up. \u201cThey said they were on the way.\u201d \u201cAny minute now.\u201d He listened, but heard no siren. Listened to the woman\u2019s thready pulse, the shallow breathing. She hadn\u2019t lost too much blood, but she wasn\u2019t young, and the fear and the pain had done their work. She was in shock and needed help now. \u201cGet me a blanket,\u201d he said to the crowd. A young Hispanic woman dashed into the building next door and was back in a moment with a thin polyester bedspread.<\/p>\n

It would have to do. He wrapped the woman in the blanket and was about to pick her up and take her to St. Clare\u2019s Hospital himself when the thin wail of an ambulance siren pierced the night. He put the woman down again. \u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d he murmured to her. \u201cSiobhan \u2026 Sealy,\u201d she mumbled in a hoarse whisper. It was evident the Cutter had broken her jaw. \u201cI couldn\u2019t \u2026 fight him \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

There were tears in her eyes. He did not want this woman to use her strength blaming herself for the attack. \u201cIf you\u2019d fought him, he\u2019d have crushed you. You stayed alive. You did the right thing.\u201d \u201cBullies \u2026\u201d she muttered. \u201cNever give in to \u2026 bullies.\u201d He stroked her hair. Around them, Siobhan Sealy\u2019s neighbors watched respectfully, as if reluctant to break into his moment with her. \u201cYou didn\u2019t give in,\u201d he told her. \u201cYou were very brave. I don\u2019t want to push you Ms. Sealy, but \u2026<\/p>\n

was there anything about him, did he say anything\u2014?\u201d She closed her eyes. He knew she had not fainted, but thought maybe the question was too hard for her to answer. \u201cHis eyes were blue,\u201d she said at last. \u201cAnd he said I had to give the neighborhood a message. To get out. Take over \u2026 some other slum \u2026 get out, get out. Or he\u2019d kill us off one \u2026 by one.\u201d She shuddered. The ambulance was drawing up to the curb.<\/p>\n
