And then never, never dance with him again. The bondsman ushered them into the ballroom. Flustered and trembling was not how she wanted to dance, especially not this minuet. But it was what she had to work with, so she would get on with it. The musicians played the opening measure. How strange it sounded on warm-blood instruments when one was accustomed to hearing it sung by a fairy dragon.

It was prettier when Half Wing sang it. Roger bowed. She curtsied, silently counting the tempo, but the throbbing pulse in her throat and temples made it difficult to hear the music’s timing. One, two, three … four, five, six. … One, two, three … four, five, six. … After so many hours under Half Wing’s direction, her feet knew the motions: step, together, dip the knees, step, step, step.

What would Roger think to learn she had been taught by a dragon, not by Mr. Dodge? No! Roger’s timing was off! She nearly stumbled, uncertain whether to match her steps to his, or follow the music. She caught herself and half-stepped several times to restore herself to the proper footing. All the while, Roger continued on as though he were dancing alone, unaware of his mistakes and his partner.

Whenever Mr. Bexley faltered during their lessons, she always, always accommodated, covering his missteps, and helping him back to rights. She did that at every ball she had ever attended. Was that not common courtesy due to every dancer on the floor? To be denied such a thing after having helped so many others, unfair and humiliating. Her face chilled and her fingers tingled. But the music continued. OceanofPDF.com Author’s Note OceanofPDF.com March 15, 1815 Margaret Dashwood dearly loved to dance. More than her mother had, more than her sisters did, more than any girl she knew near Delaford and beyond.

She loved to dance. And she was good at it—very, very good. Her friends said she seemed to float along the floor. The local fairy dragons rumored she could fly above the dance floor. Of course, that was not true. Nevertheless, it was delightful to be talked about that way.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
