Slowly and then all at once, it started taking over Russell’s life. While Russell spent his free time partying with his dealer friends, I was feeling even more alone. Even though we were still in each other’s lives, it was clear that he and I were setting out on different paths. But it was the birth of a destructive new era that we were all heading towards. None of us saw the violence of the crack era coming. None of us imagined the effects that this new drug would have on our communities.

Russell lost his dice touch and his sharpness as a Sol. Girls would steal from him. He started owing money to support his habit. A lot of money. And users who owed money would often wind up dead. More than once, I’d be breaking a drug dealer at cee-lo, watching these guys gamble away money that I knew they owed other people, money that if they couldn’t pay would get them killed. If you know your activity is contributing to a person possibly losing his life because of money, how you going to be happy with yourself?

Something had definitely changed. The value system was deteriorating. I’d see my friends who were still running in the streets, and how they didn’t have no relationships with their own children. A new generation of dealers was coming of age, more hopeless and angry than mine. More money to be had, but more brutal policing, too. The stakes were getting astronomical.

As a hustler who prided himself on his intellect, I was feeling like a relic in this dawning age of kidnappings and shoot-outs. Even though I’d always played dice against guys who dealt drugs and weren’t afraid to pull a gun or a knife on you, I had never been afraid for my physical safety.

I came from a strong family of gangsters and hustlers and usually gambled with a friend-slash-bodyguard to watch my back and add to my mystique. I didn’t have to worry about jealous retaliation for my success, because if you lost the money fair and square, it was on you. There was a code. My back was straight.

“A legend.” Ava DuVernay “Black fashion’s greatest treasure.” BET “The ultimate success saga.” André Leon Talley “The godfather of hip-hop fashion.” The Source “America at its best.” Michaela angela Davis “The epitome of style and grace.” La La Anthony “A creative icon.” Bethann Hardison “The original influencer.” Ashley Graham OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com OceanofPDF.com This is a work of nonfiction.
