He had won, and they both knew it, but his victory looked different than she had expected. Less triumphant, more like the conclusion of a business transaction that had taken longer to complete than either party had hoped. She looked up at him and nodded once. Ferox stood slowly and moved toward her, and she forced herself to remain still as his shadow fell across the furs.

The fire crackled behind him and cast his face in sharp relief, all angles and scars and grey eyes that reflected nothing. He reached out and touched her cheek with fingers that were surprisingly gentle, and she did not flinch, while outside, the sounds of the camp continued as they always had, men talking and laughing around their fires, unaware that anything had changed. —- OceanofPDF.com The Fort The cohort marched out at first light in column formation, just over two hundred and forty hundred men in full kit with their hobnailed caligae striking the ground in perfect unison and their pilum heads catching the pale morning sun.

Tribune Corvus rode at the head of the column on a bay mare that danced sideways at the sound of the horns, and behind him his centurions kept pace on foot with their vine staves tucked under their arms and their transverse crests marking them clearly against the grey sky. Seneca watched from the rampart as they passed through the gates and onto the road that led north, and he felt the weight of certainty settling in his stomach.

Everything about the column spoke of Roman discipline and Roman confidence, from the precise spacing between the files to the way the men held their shields and the measured cadence of their breathing. They looked like what they were, professional soldiers marching to war, and under normal circumstances they would have been more than capable of handling whatever enemy they might encounter.

But these were not normal circumstances, and the enemy they were marching toward had probably spent months preparing for exactly this response.

All rights are reserved. Branches tore at his face and roots snatched at his feet, but he did not slow… could not slow. Behind him, somewhere in the darkness that had swallowed the forest whole, his comrades were dying. He heard Macro scream first. A sound that started high and sharp and then cut off so suddenly that the silence afterwards was worse than the scream itself.

Then came the wet thud of something heavy hitting the ground, and Servius ran harder, his lungs burning and his heart slamming against his ribs. The moon had vanished an hour ago, smothered by clouds that rolled across the sky like a burial shroud. Now there was only blackness, absolute and hungry, and the sounds of men being slaughtered somewhere far behind him.

Another scream. Flavius, he thought, or perhaps Cato. It was impossible to tell when they all sounded the same at the end. Impossible to tell when the darkness stripped away everything that made a man who he was, and left only the animal beneath, howling its terror into the uncaring night. Servius crashed through a wall of undergrowth and stumbled into a small clearing.

He stopped, chest heaving, and tried to listen past the thunder of his own pulse. The forest had gone quiet, with no screams now and no sounds of pursuit, just the soft rustle of wind through branches and the distant call of an owl. They were gone, all of them, forty men who had marched into the forest with him three weeks ago, veterans of the Danube frontier who had laughed at the stories of demons and boasted of what they would do to whatever savages had been raiding the trade routes.

Now they were nothing but meat cooling on the forest floor, and Servius was alone. He pressed his back against a tree and forced himself to breathe. He had to think. The river was south, he was almost certain and if he could reach the river, he could follow it back to the fort.

Back to walls and torches and men with swords who could stand between him and whatever was hunting them.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
