Sunlight poured through the windows and reflected, obnoxiously, off the polished glass cases which held rings, watch chains, and other sundry jewelry that glittered as if the world were not presently trying to devour decent people.

The reason for the smoke was a small brick-lined furnace that glowed in the back. Myriad, specific tools of the trade hung in careful order on a well-organized board. A clean, expansive workspace set up underneath it. At the end of the workbench, an intricate balance scale sat on the counter, precise enough to weigh guilt and dispense change. The small, silver-haired man behind the counter was looking through a large magnifying glass affixed to the counter and filing a small ring in a delicate vise, as he looked up through pince-nez glasses and frowned, nose wrinkled as though he smelled something rotten.

“I don’t buy stolen,” he said as he looked back down to his work and started filing away with renewed vigor. Doc smiled faintly, almost dismissively. “My good sir, we are not selling.” Glancing at the sign hanging over the door that read, ‘B.E. Franklin, Assayer’, Doc ascertained and asked, “You’d be Mr. Franklin?”

“I am,” he said, curtly, and then asked, equally as curt, “Whaddya want?” “Silver,” Declan said. “We require silver.” “Silver costs,” said the little man. “Aye, so it does,” Godwin set a purse down. “An’ so do funerals.” Doc asked, “Might you be able to supply us with an ample supply of aforementioned precious metal, good sir?”

The jeweler blinked and looked Doc up and down and asked, “What?” “Occupational hazard, sir,” quipped Jed as he flashed an annoyed glance at Doc, even though he smiled while doing it. “He does that a lot. He just wants to know if you can help us out with silver.” Doc continued, unabated, “We require lead cast with a measured amount of silver alloyed throughout.” The jeweler blinked, realization finally gaining on him.

“Wait. Do you mean that you want to shoot coin?” Jed leaned in and clarified, “No, sir. We want to shoot somethin’ that ain’t exactly a man with a particular kinda ball. An’ that takes coin bein’ mixed with lead. Savvy?” The jeweler’s eyes grew wide, coming to grips with the realization of the request. The winds carried whispers out here in the Frontier, and those whispers of what had been happening had fallen onto his ears. Pure metal for corrupt beings. Declan asked, “Well, man, can ya do it or no?”

pointing at the heavy purse adorning the counter.

Cover design & formatting by Luka T. ROBERTS ROBBY RAINES PATRICK AKIBA LANAYE PERKINS WYATT ESTES LYNN JORDAN KEN BROCK DR. CARLEY DAVIS DR. KEITH DAVIS ALEX PALMER RYAN DUNCAN OceanofPDF.com L NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR ittle did I know, twenty-two years ago, that I would one day be writing a book. The inspiration for this story is layered, much like my interests have always been. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a fan of all things Old West, and, perhaps less coincidentally, vampires.

I’ve been reading western novels since I was around ten years old, starting with Louis L’Amour’s The Sackett series. Not long after came another foundational read: Dracula, by Bram Stoker. Those were only the first stops in a long line of literary adventures that carried me, in my imagination, to other times and places, worlds that stayed with me long after the final page was turned.

The true origin of this book, however, dates back to 2004, when I began cowboy action shooting. Participants are encouraged to adopt a catchy moniker. Having been born in Natchez, Mississippi, a town steeped in history, and having worked in the medical field, I chose the name “Natchez Medicine Man”. Along with the nickname came another tradition: writing your character’s legend. So, I wrote mine.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
