He won\u2019t wake up.\u201d The sound shifts, and my voice goes quieter, like I turned away from the microphone. \u201cRJ, baby\u2026I need you to open your eyes. Please, please, please, wake up.\u201d My gut clinches unhappily at the memory of trying to rouse RJ from his unconsciousness like I\u2019m there again. When all I wanted were his words, all I got was more blood coming out of his mouth.<\/p>\n

The man\u2019s voice remains soothing and calm. \u201cDove, can you tell me exactly what happened?\u201d \u201cThese guys attacked us. They just came up to us out of nowhere, and they separated us. RJ, he tried to stop them, but there were too many of them. When I woke up, RJ was\u2026he\u2019s not waking up.\u201d \u201cDove, can you tell me if RJ is breathing?\u201d \u201cYes, but\u2026 but he\u2019s really struggling.\u201d A hiccup. \u201cI c- can\u2019t get him to open his eyes. There\u2019s blood every\u2014where.\u201d \u201cCan you tell me if there were any weapons involved?<\/p>\n

Do you see any wounds on his body caused by a knife or gun?\u201d \u201cNo. No. But there were five of them.\u201d \u201cDove, are you injured?\u201d I sound slow as I say, \u201cYes. My\u2026my head hurts. I hit my head.\u201d \u201cOkay. I\u2019m sending an ambulance and the police to your location. Are you alone, are your attackers still in the area?\u201d There is a long pause on my end. When my voice cuts back in, there is a newfound panic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026oh, my God. I don\u2019t know. What if they come back?\u201d \u201cI want you to take a really close look at your surroundings. Do you see anything to indicate that someone is still there?\u201d \u201cUmm\u2026\u201d Another pause. \u201cNo. No, I don\u2019t see them. But it\u2019s so dark. What if they\u2019re in the trees again? What do I do if they come back? I can\u2019t leave him.\u201d \u201cThe police are on their way to your location now. I\u2019m going to stay on the line with you until they arrive.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t expecting the sight in front of me, a room stripped back to the bare essentials.<\/p>\n

Nothing remained on the floor or the walls, and all I saw was the desk and the large bed, already covered in a thick layer of plastic to protect it from dust. When I was here two nights ago, everything was still in place. \u201cOh wow, it\u2019s so empty in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrat tradition,\u201d RJ answered, turning to me. He looked frayed and stoic in equal measure like he had not slept well. RJ was dressed for moving, his pants loose-fitting and low on his waist, his shirt worn and faded. His best friend and teammate, Will Krammer, assured me that RJ had been banned from helping at all. He still was not fully recovered from the attack almost a month ago that left him and me hospitalized.<\/p>\n

I was only in the hospital for two days, but RJ\u2019s injuries were so bad that he spent a week there, unconscious for much of that time. My injuries had all but disappeared, but RJ took the brunt of those men\u2019s fury. RJ should not be lifting anything, yet his posture looked like his body had been at work\u2026 \u201cDove, come on, your sister is here.\u201d I look up from my toes, which are buried deep in the warm sand.<\/p>\n

Ruby looks down at me from over her large sunglasses, the brim of her big floppy hat, and the ombre ends of her dreadlocks dance in unison in the sea breeze. Like me, she is dressed for the beach. She wears a tiny bikini in fire- engine red with a completely see-through white cover-up. The strap of her large beach bag sits on her left shoulder while Ruby holds her right hand out to help me to my feet. I take it and allow her to pull me up.<\/p>\n

Ruby and I cross over the busy beach towards the parking lot.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
