Nicholas could hear Noel sighing, but each time he reached for her, each time he tried to engage her, apologize to her, he got nothing from her. that rejection was better than the tears she tried to cry silently. But Nicholas heard her and, with every tear that spilled on Noel\u2019s beautiful cheeks, pricked Nick\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n

Irrationality? Maybe. Noel might have felt like she overreacted if the circumstances were different. They weren\u2019t. There had never been a time when Noel felt so insecure in her marriage, in her connection to Nicholas. The last time insecurity crept into their relationship was upon Nick\u2019s disclosure of who he really was \u2013 the Don of a mafia family.<\/p>\n

And although that was a huge disclosure, one that could have rocked and ruined their relationship, Noel took some time, sat with it, and decided that she could handle what she learned. She loved Nicholas just that much. Yet, that same sinking feeling Noel got the first time she encountered Kirsten accidentally returned with force. It was disrespectful, blatantly disrespectful and Noel had a hard time shaking that feeling. It was even harder lying next to Nicholas.<\/p>\n

Pushing the covers back, she draped her legs over the side of the bed and stood up. \u201cNoel, beloved, please talk to me,\u201d Nicholas asked, reaching for her once again to no avail. But Nicholas refused to give up on reconnecting with the one person who meant the world to him. Noel didn\u2019t stop moving until she was out of their bedroom. She didn\u2019t want to talk. She didn\u2019t want to hear anything Nicholas had to say. Her eyes misted over as this was the very first time she felt that way.<\/p>\n

And then returned to Nicki as a prolonged whisper that replayed on repeat as she refocused her attention on the woman in front of her.<\/p>\n

Staring was rude, but Nicki couldn’t help it. Every facet of the woman’s face she needed etched in her memory for all the time she had no idea of what she looked like, what her mother looked like. Kirsten couldn’t hold back any of the tears that had previously threatened to spill from her lids. Just to hear those words of affirmation out loud, the acknowledgment that she had a child, that she was a mother, warmed Kirsten’s heart in a way she could have never imagined.<\/p>\n

And to then be looking up into her daughter’s eyes elevated Kirsten’s emotionality to another level. She struggled to level her breathing, to quell the tingle that roared through her body, the concern that she would be rejected after all of it. She wanted to stand up, to wrap her arms around Nicki’s neck and hold her close, close enough to feel her daughter’s heartbeat against her. Yet, Kirsten hesitated. She didn’t want to do anything that would make the moment more awkward.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
