It was racing too fast, pounding against truths he did not yet dare name. He stood. \u201cYou should try to rest,\u201d he said, his voice steadier now. \u201cYou have endured enough.\u201d Then, almost as an afterthought, \u201cI am still looking for the serpent that attacked you.\u201d \u201cUp till now? You already said it was magical.\u201d \u201cWhich is precisely why I will not rest,\u201d Sand King replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil I find who did it.\u201d He moved closer to her. And then\u2014 A sharp, sudden, and devastating pain seized his chest as though something inside him had been grabbed and contorted. His hand flew to his chest, trying to contain what threatened to burst free. The ache was not physical alone.<\/p>\n

It was yearning. A raw, deep pulling. \u201cAre you okay?\u201d Yarinya asked. She moved closer instinctively, her hand hovering near him. Her nearness made it worse. Their eyes met. Effectively, the chamber dissolved. The walls vanished. The sands went silent. For a moment, there was nothing but her gaze and his. It was deep and still. Almost hypnotic. His heart pounded intensely. This is it, his voice whispered inside him.<\/p>\n

The pull Gizo-Gizo warned me about. His thoughts fractured. I must control this. The ache intensified, spreading like fire through his veins. I cannot afford to lose myself. A muscle ticked in his cheek. I am greater than any magical pull. I am not a mere mortal. I can withstand any magic. And then\u2014 Her eyes changed. Or perhaps it was him, because within Yarinya\u2019s intense look, he saw a shimmer. More than that, he saw Ruwa.<\/p>\n

And Ruwa looked back at him. When she wore the mask of a mortal, cycles ago\u2026 In Yarinya\u2019s eyes, he saw Ruwa laughing. Then he saw her standing ankle-deep in water, deliberately splashing him. He saw the way she exaggerated her movements, slipping once on purpose, just to make him reach for her. \u201cYou frowned less when you trusted me,\u201d Ruwa had teased, circling him like mischief itself. \u201cSo I suppose I must make you smile more.\u201d He saw her trying and failing to suppress laughter when she made terrible jokes.<\/p>\n

He saw her dance awkwardly, proudly, just to provoke a reaction. He saw her leaning too close, and the moment they almost kissed. And the way he had pulled back sharply, reminding himself\u2014 This is political. This is necessary. This is not love. The memory shattered. The present shifted back into place.<\/p>\n

Sand King tore his attention away from Yarinya. His heart pounded. No, he needed to get away from her presence.<\/p>\n
