If I had snooped more, that would\u2019ve meant I didn\u2019t trust him. I never even bothered to try to read his text messages or to see what was on his phone. Not that I could have anyway. He was very careful to keep it locked with a passcode, and he never left the room without making sure that it was inaccessible to anyone who might be tempted.<\/p>\n

Maybe if I had violated his privacy, I would have found out the truth. Or maybe it was just Dru\u2019s questions that made me suddenly doubt him. As long as I was with him, I never for an instant thought that he was lying about anything. Later\u2014much, much later\u2014I would come to understand that empaths merge with their partners and see everything from a partner\u2019s point of view, unless the empath is aware of it and can guard against it. Someone intending harm can sometimes come across as being completely earnest and even protective.<\/p>\n

A villainous person doesn\u2019t see his own actions as harmful, and therefore an empath feels as secure in the intended action as the one doing harm. Dru didn\u2019t answer me. She squinted at her laptop screen and continued to type. \u201cOkay, okay,\u201d she mumbled. \u201cI\u2019ve narrowed it down to probably a thousand people if you take into account a couple of sorority houses on campus.\u201d \u201cHmmm. I don\u2019t think she\u2019s a sorority girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
