\u201cI\u2019m just thinking things through.\u201d Tar turned to Kyra. \u201cNik Kota wasn\u2019t a small guy. It would have been difficult for Hattie to overpower him.\u201d Nik had been a CrossFitter, and Kyra had seen firsthand their display of strength. \u201cYou don\u2019t think she could have killed him?\u201d \u201cNot on her own, no.\u201d Tarek\u2019s phone buzzed, and he glanced at the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to take this. Gul, can I get a burger?\u201d \u201cRight up.\u201d When Tarek was out of sight, Gully pulled one of his towels out and wiped down the shiny bar. \u201cHe\u2019s doing better.\u201d It wasn\u2019t a question. \u201cThis is good. Get him working.\u201d He leaned down, resting his forearms on the bar top so he was at eye level with Kyra. \u201cThe last time he was hurt on the job, after he was stabbed, he was in a bad place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyra\u2019s breath hitched. Tarek had nearly died when a routine drug bust went wrong. \u201cHe wasn\u2019t as bad as he\u2019s been this time, but he wasn\u2019t himself for a long while. It wasn\u2019t until he was assigned to investigate a mass grave that he finally worked himself out of his funk. I\u2019m not suggesting you commit a massacre. Not unless you want to.\u201d It may have been a joke, but neither of them cracked a smile.<\/p>\n

Gully pulled back and tapped the bar. \u201cGet his brain busy, Kyra. It helps.\u201d She pressed her lips together in a tight line. She wasn\u2019t at all certain she was up for the task. \u201cI\u2019ll try.\u201d Gully straightened to his full, imposing height. He turned to the digital ordering display.<\/p>\n
