His physical challenges made him vulnerable, and his habit of talking to strangers would have made him an easy target for anyone looking to take advantage. That was one of the theories the police were working on. Then they got a break in the case. Terry’s missing scooter had been found. The mobility device was located in the courtyard of an apartment complex a few blocks from the church. Questioning residents, investigators learned that one of them had seen smoke coming from an upper-floor unit on August 5, the same day the body was found.

The unit was currently rented by a man named Edward McFarland, an individual well-known to local law enforcement. But this wasn’t the only thing the informant had to share. According to him, McFarland was often in the company of a woman named Angela Simpson. The pair had approached him on August 5, asking if they could borrow his car.

When he asked what they needed it for, Angela said that she had killed a ‘snitch’ and needed to get rid of the body. The witness had told her he didn’t want to get involved, and she and McFarland then left. But not before Simpson issued a chilling warning. She told him not to say anything to the police or he’d meet the same fate as the snitch she’d murdered.

So who was this ‘snitch’ that Simpson was referring to? Was it possible that it was Terry Neely? A search of MacFarland’s apartment provided the answer. Traces of blood were found inside the unit and sent to the lab for analysis. They provided a DNA match to Neely. Investigators found even more blood inside a second unit, which their informant said was where Angela Simpson lived. This, too, was matched to the murder victim. Simpson and McFarland had some pressing questions to answer. Fortunately, they were easy to find.

They had recently been arrested for armed robbery and were in the county lockup. The detectives who went to interview the pair were prepared for resistance. And they got it, at least from one of the suspects. Edward McFarland was less than cooperative, offering a blanket denial to any question that was put to him. Angela Simpson, on the other hand, was happy to speak.

She cheerily admitted that she had killed Terry Neely, boasting that she’d made him suffer for three days before ending his life. According to Simpson, she encountered Terry riding his scooter along the sidewalk and lured him to her apartment with the promise of “sex and drugs.” Terry left his scooter in the courtyard, and they headed upstairs. “Don’t let them tell you that motherf**ker couldn’t walk,” she told the officers.

“He walked very well.” Whether or not Terry was physically capable of climbing the stairs, he was no match for Simpson. They were barely through the door when she overpowered him and tied him to a chair.

No part of this publication may be copied or reproduced in any format, electronic or otherwise, without the prior written consent of the copyright holder and publisher.
