\u201cWally?\u201d Jo Beth and Zeb would hash out the details between them. Zander wasn\u2019t budging, so he could update me on the rules she laid down for us later. \u201cThe living room would be nice,\u201d he said mildly. \u201cI have some footage from last night, if Zander would be so kind as to cue it up for me before he leaves.\u201d Zander, busy eavesdropping, nodded he would be along shortly. With that settled, I retrieved Wally, carried him into the living room, and affixed him to the wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really am sorry, Ellie.\u201d He kept his voice low to evade shifter hearing. \u201cAre we okay?\u201d One of the first things he taught me, after how to survive, was to leave no regrets behind prior to deployment. Anything that needed saying, he advised us to get off our chests in case there wasn\u2019t a chance later. In our line of work, laters were never guaranteed. Much as I wanted to leave him hanging, I had to ask, \u201cDoes this have anything to do with Pastor Joe?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said slowly, then he pursed his lips. \u201cAnd yes.\u201d \u201cWell, that makes things as clear as mud.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not jealous, if that\u2019s what you\u2019re asking.\u201d He rolled his eyes with a clicking noise when he caught my expression calling him a liar. \u201cAll right, all right.<\/p>\n

I was ready to spit nails by the time you got home.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m glad to hear it.\u201d Warmth blossomed in my chest. \u201cWhat does one have to do with the other?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s no surprise that I\u2019ve been\u2026\u201d \u201c\u2026unhappy.\u201d That was the kindest word choice I could get past my lips. \u201cAnd?\u201d \u201cYou going out, doing something you enjoy, sparked an epiphany.\u201d \u201cYou realized you love your wife and don\u2019t want to see her with another man?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d His chest whined as it deflated. \u201cBut I also realized we quit living after I was cursed.\u201d \u201cWally\u2026\u201d \u201cHear me out.\u201d He drew in a breath he didn\u2019t need out of habit. \u201cWe got so paranoid this \u2018body\u2019 would break, we went on lockdown. You kept the carpets that you hate cleaning just so if you dropped me, I would bounce.<\/p>\n

All I do is move from room to room, with your help, and you\u2019re not much better. Other than a case here or there, you\u2019re as stuck as I am.\u201d \u201cAs long as I\u2019m stuck with you, I don\u2019t care.\u201d I stroked his rubber cheek. \u201cYou\u2019re all I need to be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
