If I didn\u2019t agree, I should dis- appear from the building or my mother would end up crying at my grave. After dinner, I didn\u2019t go home. I hid and watched my executioner walk calmly toward Avenida S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o. When he was far away, I went to the brothel and started screaming for Cec\u00edlia from the middle of the street. She appeared on the balcony, then came down and invited me in. She explained everything. She said that she couldn\u2019t say anything to me at the time because if she did, she would lose her apartment.<\/p>\n

She explained that The Portugu\u00eas was a fa- mous pimp in the Boca do Lixo, and that he pimped out about ten women on that block alone. I was destroyed, thinking that the only thing left to do was to leave and forget that I had ever wanted to be a prostitute. The learning curve was too steep. I don\u2019t know what came over Cec\u00edlia then; either she felt some inkling of sympathy for me or she didn\u2019t want to lose a good tenant. She asked me if I wanted to keep working, and I said that I did.<\/p>\n

Under the condition that I would keep her assistance a secret, she offered to help me figure out a scheme to stay permanently at the brothel. She asked if I was woman enough to take on the challenge, and I told her that I was. I slept in Cec\u00edlia\u2019s apartment that night and spent the entire following day locked in her room, without being seen by anyone, not even by the women of the house. At night, The Portugu\u00eas dropped by to collect my money and Ce- c\u00edlia told him that I hadn\u2019t showed up to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll be back,\u201d he commented. A Solution Named Velvet That same night, a Black man appeared at the building, dressed in the typical elegance of a S\u00e3o Paulo gangster: a silk shirt, tailored pants, kid-\u00adskin shoes, and a giant gold watch engraved with a single word: Veludo (Velvet). A civil police officer from the vice squad, he was a friend of the madams in the Boca do Lixo and did favors for them from time to time. His nickname was Velvet because he spoke gently and was extremely polite.<\/p>\n

But he had the reputation of being a tough cop. With the doors locked, Cec\u00edlia called me into the living room and asked me to tell him the story of my troubles with The Portugu\u00eas, without omitting any details. Velvet listened to me attentively. When I finished, he asked me one question: \u201cAre you, like the rest of these silly girls, in love with him?\u201d I said no, not at all.<\/p>\n
