Ronan knew he\u2019d spent time with Cope the night before and had wanted to find out what they\u2019d talked about, but there hadn\u2019t been time. Ten seemed to have a lot on his mind and Ronan hadn\u2019t wanted to push. He had a feeling the conversation would be lengthy. Instead of worrying about Ten, Ronan turned his thoughts to the office. Today was going to be Greeley\u2019s first. He couldn\u2019t wait to dive into a case with the young detective. He knew Greeley coming to work with the cold case unit was a dream come true for Fitzgibbon.<\/p>\n

Father and son were waiting for Ronan when he walked into the office. \u201cHey, guys! You both look ready to rock and roll.\u201d \u201cHey, yourself.\u201d Fitz walked to the coffee pot and poured himself a to-go cup, adding cream and sugar before fitting the lid. \u201cWe started the day in Cisco\u2019s office with Greeley being sworn in and getting his detective\u2019s badge.\u201d Greeley held up the shiny shield, before clipping it back to his belt loop.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongrats, man. I\u2019m so happy to have you on the team.\u201d Ronan pulled Greeley in for a quick hug. \u201cI\u2019ve got a couple of meetings downtown this morning, so I\u2019m leaving Greeley with you, Ronan. Get him logged into the computer and then start looking for our next case. It\u2019s a new year and I want to start it strong.\u201d Ronan knew Fitz meant he wanted to prove to the chief and mayor that approving the addition of a fourth cold case detective had been money well spent.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got it, boss. I\u2019ll make sure Greeley\u2019s settled in.\u201d \u201cCall if you need anything.\u201d Fitz shrugged into his jacket and walked out of the office. \u201cI can\u2019t believe this space used to be Carson and Cole\u2019s apartment.\u201d Greeley looked around the large open space, which used to serve as the living room. \u201cYou guys did an amazing job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re running out of office space at the Salem Police Department and there wasn\u2019t enough room to house us. Cisco offered us a conference room to work out of, but we\u2019d all be displaced when meetings were held, so Fitz asked if we could repurpose our PI office here at West Side Magick and he said yes. Hell, we already had desks and office equipment, plus it put off needing to worry about new office space for the foreseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ronan pointed to Fitz\u2019s office. \u201cDid your Dad show you our offices?\u201d Greeley nodded. \u201cHe gave me the empty one, but said you guys mostly work out here at the conference table.\u201d \u201cWe do,\u201d Ronan agreed.<\/p>\n

Eleven-year-old Tennyson Grimm\u2019s full attention was focused on Miss Glendale and the algebraic equation she was writing on the board. 2x=10. Why the hell was there a letter mixed in with the numbers? He looked around the room and could see the \u201caha!\u201d light come on in his classmates\u2019 eyes. Tobey March and Kent Stevens elbowed each other and pointed to Ten. Each boy made the letter \u201cL\u201d with their thumb and first finger and slapped it to their forehead.<\/p>\n

The universal sign for loser. It crossed Ten\u2019s mind to shoot both boys the bird, but why bother? They were right. Ten hated math. His parents had bought him a scientific calculator for Christmas. It could add, subtract, multiply, and divide in a matter of seconds. Ten\u2019s father, David, made sure it also had functions for equations, trigonometry, and calculus. Foreign words to Ten, ones he hoped he never had to learn about up close and personal. Turning his attention back to the board, Ten saw Alice Sawyer raise her hand and in her prissy voice announced that \u201cX\u201d was the number five.<\/p>\n

Two times five was ten, therefore X equaled five. Ten understood it now that he heard Alice explain it, but he still felt like an absolute dope for not catching on sooner, like the rest of the class had done. Steeling his spine, Ten watched as Miss Glendale wrote a second equation on the board. He dutifully copied it into his notebook and was in the process of trying to sort it out for himself before the teacher asked for the answer, when something landed on his desk.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
