I nodded as Mandy shrugged, looking back at the room Lukas had previously occupied. “I don’t mind having a room to myself,” she said. “Looks cosy, anyway.” I was grateful as she started to make her way towards the room, her not- yet-unpacked suitcase in one hand and an easy expression on her face.

Maybe… maybe Mandy wasn’t that bad. I couldn’t stand the thought of sleeping anywhere near those bloodied sheets tonight – even if Lisa was coming to change them, and the small room was on the other side of a wall. She arrived within the hour, carrying a bundle of fresh linen and cleaning products, a serious look on her face. Her blonde hair was all mussed up, as if she’d been asleep and quickly thrown on some clothes, forehead even more lined than it had been previously with her evident worry – and fear.

She went straight to me and gave me a hug, before looking around at the rest of us. “You never should have left the door open,” she said at once, shaking her head. “That was very, very irresponsible of you. We’re in the middle of the countryside, here; there’s no perimeter fence, so anyone could get in.

That’s why you all have keys, and the lot of you have codes for the other buildings. Have you called the police yet?” “We assumed it was just a prank,” Marcus told her, one eyebrow raised. “But nobody’s owning up.” My stomach felt choppy as I stared at him, trying to work him out. We’d discussed the situation since finding Pudding, Sofia more vigorously than the rest.

We’d all been in different rooms in the main house when the vandalism must have been carried out, so it would have been easy for one of us to slip away and squirt the ketchup, carefully snip Pudding’s head from his neck. I felt sick, shaky, as I imagined any of my friends doing so, going to such careful measures to remove my teddy’s furry head and trample bloody footprints over the carpet…

And… why weren’t they admitting to it now? Were they backtracking, realising that this was taking it too far? The only possible culprit was Marcus. Mandy was too indifferent – she wanted her hands on the boys, sure, and maybe was jealous of my friendship with Sofia, but she wasn’t a psychopath… I didn’t think. But Marcus hated me. He thought I was a slut.

He said so himself. It was only a few hours ago that we’d broken up, if you could call it that, though it felt like centuries had passed since.

I’ve decided to keep a sort of virtual journal this year, because I got a new iPad for Christmas – thank you, Mum and Darren! – and it has this app on it, a journal app, the kind that has a crappy interface and a default Comic Sans font (no offence). But… I think it’ll be fun, especially to look back on. I’m going on holiday in just a few days with my best friend, Sofia, and some of the others from college, including my sort of on-and-off boyfriend, Marcus.

Even though it’s stupid – and I know it’s stupid – I can’t help but look back on everything that happened with Ethan and wish… well, wish that I’d kept a log of it, taken more photos and videos, pasted them all into an album. Titled it: My First Love, or something similar. I can already feel myself falling for Marcus, for his messy hair and dark eyes, and I want to be prepared for when that happens… want to have a specific log of the events from back to front, just in case it doesn’t work out after all and I ever need it as evidence.

Anyway… we’re going to the Lakes! I’m really excited, because it’s going to be fab for photos, and I’ve recently got really into this cool new app – it’s called HeavenSent, and it’s basically if my two favourite social media sites had a baby and birthed this beautiful, marvellous creation. You get encouraged through prompts to live your best life by going outside and seeing new things, all while being as aesthetic as possible…

and all of the big influencers on there have a carefully curated, gorgeous profile filled with matching photos and vibes. It’s always been my dream to go into fashion one day – or maybe marketing and social media – so this is really exciting for me. My goal in 2025 is to get a proper following online and start reaching more people… then maybe next year I can finally start my boutique.

I’ve been thinking about it for so long, planning with Sofia, but I don’t want to hold off any longer. I think 2025 is going to be my year… I can just feel it.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
