That mumble-mouthed motherfucker can only say one thing, \u2018M-m-m-mall!\u2019\u201d Zak mimicked Jeremy\u2019s voice. \u201cWhat are you worried about?<\/p>\n

That he might tell?\u201d \u201cNo, not that. It shouldn\u2019t have happened. What we did that day . . . It just shouldn\u2019t have happened.\u201d Zak reached over and grabbed Corey by the scruff of his collar. \u201cWell, it did happen; you knew it was going to happen\u2014we planned it that way.<\/p>\n

If you didn\u2019t want to talk to me when I called, there were other ways to persuade you.\u201d Corey reached inside his thick winter jacket and pulled out a handwritten piece of paper that read Meet me tomorrow night at eleven o\u2019clock by the east doors of the mall.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about the creepazoid. \u201cThat made you come meet me, didn\u2019t it? Scared?\u201d Zak laughed. \u201cYou wrote this?\u201d \u201cGot you here, didn\u2019t it?\u201d \u201cWell . . . what about him? What about Jeremy?\u201d Zak\u2019s lips peeled back like a rabid dog, and his nose wrinkled. \u201cNo. Not about him. I heard .<\/p>\n

. . you spoke to Audrey.\u201d Corey looked puzzled. \u201cNo.\u201d \u201cSure about that?\u201d \u201cYeah. Why, what have you done to her now?\u201d \u201cWhat have I done? It\u2019s about what she\u2019s done.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s she done?\u201d Corey asked worriedly. \u201cShe\u2019s gone, that\u2019s what! Up and left! She found a place at some dumb-ass art college, and she\u2019s bailed town!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d was my answer; it all comes from the imagination. Well, that\u2019s not true. Parts of Dead Mall are based on situations that occurred in my younger years. Without giving the plot away, as a teenager\u2014 and under the influence of my friend\u2014when purchasing a book, I once slipped a note to a girl who worked at the bookstore in my local mall asking her out and to meet me a week later for a date.<\/p>\n

It was the \u201990s\u2014a different time\u2014and she did look like Fairuza Balk in The Craft, so in my horny pea brain, it made sense. The week rolled on, and instinct and sense kicked in\u2014they always do after the fact\u2014that slipping a note or a love letter (yuck) to someone wasn\u2019t a great idea. I had no idea who this girl was, if she had a boyfriend, or what the fuck I was doing.<\/p>\n

So instead of meeting at the place I said I\u2019d meet her \u2014I didn\u2019t even know her name, what a dweeb\u2014I went to the top of a multistory carpark next to the designated rendezvous point to make sure she turned up before I turned up. This apparently was good thinking. I have no idea what the plan was, but a girl who looked like the girl from the bookstore turned up outside the Pizza Hut where I planned to meet\u2014always the class act.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
