Light streamed around the figure and lit up the room with a blinding brilliance. Marek whimpered and hid his face. \u201cWho are you?\u201d the countess whispered, shielding her dazzled eyes. \u201cI am Azazel, Lord and Standard Bearer to Lucifer, the Prince of Light,\u201d the figure announced grandly. It advanced into the room and pointed at them. \u201cGet down on your knees, miserable Earth creatures and crawl. Crawl before your new Lord and Master.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once upon a time, the story goes, at the beginning of the CIRCLE OF EARTH, BEFORE THE PORTALS OF THE WORLD WERE iN the flashes of lightning shone, there were a number of angels who, out of envy and pride, decided to raise a rebellion against God himself.<\/p>\n

Led by their prince, a seraph once called Lucifer the Light-Bringer, the apostate angels fought and lost and were hurled headlong out of heaven. As they plummeted through the empty, bottomless air, their bodies stung by sulphurous hail, the rebellious angels saw the newly created Earth hanging from heaven by a silver chain, looking like a tiny, bright azure bead in the endless night sky. And as soon as he saw the beautiful, brand-neW world, Lucifer resolved to get his revenge upon God. He omEn^zzo i determined that he would secretly go and visit the Earth to learn all about it, so that he and his followers might one day bring evil and destruction there.<\/p>\n

He knew there were people living there. His one fixed objective now was to turn them against their creator, and then to drive them out, just as he and his followers had been driven out of heaven. So, filled with this intent, Lucifer selected one angel, a former prince amongst cherubim, to accompany him, and under cover of night the two fallen angels flew silently towards Earth on their great wings.<\/p>\n

Only a thin fragile thread of hope was keeping them alive. Nearby, a third man was curled in his sleeping bag. He looked contentedly asleep. But his two companions knew better: this was a sleep from which he would never awake. A few hours earlier, the man had finally succumbed to frostbite and the mind-numbing cold. Now he was dead.<\/p>\n
