Lamond\u2019s initial observations at the crime scene had made it clear that this might be pivotal to making some sort of sense of the deaths of these two men. Two hours later, feeling a little shell-shocked and in need of a caffeine hit, they made their way back to the station. Elliot was on the phone rounding up the troops for a briefing to share any data that had been collected in their absence.<\/p>\n

As Jazzy parked in the car park outside the station, Elliot cleared his throat and glanced at her. She turned towards him, assuming he was about to make some sort of observation on the PM findings, but he touched her arm and lowered his voice. \u2018Are you okay? I know what happened with Lucy at the scene and I know what you\u2019re like.<\/p>\n

You need to stop putting other people before yourself.\u2019 Jazzy blinked away the sting of tears that nipped behind her eyes and, not trusting herself to speak, shook her head. Not now, please, not now! But she couldn\u2019t get the words out over the lump in her throat. She didn\u2019t want to do this. Not with Elliot. But he didn\u2019t pick up on her cue and continued. \u2018This has got nothing to do with you, Jazzy.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re not to blame for Dwayne Taggart\u2019s death. Nor for Lewis Fletcher getting off in the first place. It was that wee scrotum of a DCI who was to blame, not you. You have to stop giving in to this saviour complex of yours.\u2019 Until the \u2018saviour complex\u2019 phrase, Jazzy had been willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and just brush off his concerns, but his choice of words got right under her skin.<\/p>\n

A wrecking ball slammed into her from nowhere, knocking her earlier resolve to be civil to Elliot into the wind, along with all her inhibitions.<\/p>\n
