Anyway, it beats being home by a long shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fran stood awkwardly in the doorway, her left hand holding her right elbow behind her back. She smiled sadly. \u201cYeah, I guess it does.\u201d She couldn\u2019t think of anything else to say. What could you tell a guy whose father beat him? \u201cWell,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll be right back.\u201d \u201cOkay.\u201d Fran stuck her head back in the doorway almost at once. \u201cThat was quick,\u201d Mike joked. \u201cOh, where are you going to check?\u201d she asked. \u201cMr. Binder\u2019s got a phone in the base\u00ac ment, I guess I\u2019ll go down there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fran nodded. \u201cGreat. Hey, maybe Mr. Binder\u2019s still down there.\u201d \u201cAt this hour?\u201d \u201cYeah. I guess you\u2019re right.\u201d She waved and disappeared again. Mike waited until he was sure she was Eric Weiner gone. And even then, he stayed where he was, sitting behind the secretary\u2019s desk. Ten minutes later, Fran was making her way back from the teachers\u2019 lounge.<\/p>\n<p>Like Miss \u2018Merriwether\u2019s phone, the teachers\u2019 lounge phone was also locked. She was half\u00ac way down the first floor hallway when she heard the footsteps. She turned sharply. There was nothing in the hall, nothing but lockers, all of them shut. \u201cMike?\u201d she called. Silence. \u201cOwen? Jill?\u201d Feeling foolish, she turned and continued walking. But now she was sure of it, sure she was not alone.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped, listening hard. She heard a door scrape on its hinges. \u201cJaclyn?\u201d she called. \u201cGlen?\u201d Her heart was pounding. Look at me, she thought. Scared silly. And of what? She turned around again. Keeping her eyes on the long dark hallway, she started walking backward. No one jumped out at her from the dark classroom doorways. No demons popped out of the lockers to grab her in their claws. C\u2019mon, she told herself as she reached the end of the hall. Get a grip, Weber!<\/p>\n<p>She was still walking backward when she felt the body smack into her, the arms close around her.
