She turned her face into the pillow, only it wasn\u2019t a pillow at all. She lifted a hand to feel the ma- terial under her head. The movement made her muscles ache like the day after her uncle had taught her how to rope a cow. Her arms and shoulders throbbed at the smallest of movements.<\/p>\n

When she couldn\u2019t identify what type of pillow she was lying upon, she risked opening one eye. The material was dark, with flecks of lighter wool woven through. Was that a saddle blanket? The moment the idea occurred, her fingertips confirmed it. Why am I sleeping on something that belongs to an animal? Her mind whirled with new wonders, but it seemed to take an eternity to form a question.<\/p>\n

Why am I abed when the sun is high? Then, slowly, like she was slogging through mud, she thought, Where is Petra? Brightness flashed from the other side of her closed eyelids, caus- ing her to duck her face into the scratchy horse blanket. \u201cYou\u2019re awake.\u201d Warm hands took her face, angling it, then draping a palm across her brow. Zeus. She frowned, thinking that name wasn\u2019t quite right. Zeus casts lightning. These hands were warm, like the sun.<\/p>\n

Helios. \u201cDemi, we need to get you bathed.\u201d She recognized that voice, had listened to it daily since she\u2019d embarked upon the trail. While it was possible she might imagine Alex\u2019s affection in her dreams, his words were more scandalous than her most generous fantasies. That certainty yanked her from her groggy state as surely as her uncle had ripped the legs out from under a roped calf.<\/p>\n
