Stayed focused.”

Luke set his fork down. “I’ve been seeing someone,” he said. His mother’s eyebrows lifted. Was it public, Luke translated. How bad is the damage. “Long enough,” Luke said. Another silence. His mother exchanged a glance with his father—one of those married-couple telepathy moments that said a thousand things without words. “Oh,” she said again, voice gentler now.

“I’m sorry it didn’t work out, sweetheart.” She reached over and patted his hand. “It’s probably for the best. You have to think about your future. Your career. The kind of life you want to build.” “A Hart,” his father added, shaking his head slightly. “I don’t see how it could work longterm. “She’s not her family,” Luke said. “I’m sure she’s a perfectly nice girl,” his mother added quickly.

Luke’s heart pounded. The scent of her enveloped him. Grace let out a soft whimper as he trailed kisses down her neck. She was soft, her skin warm beneath his touch. He could feel her rapid pulse against his lips, could feel the heat of her body, the desire that matched his own. Her hands came up, fingers tangling in his hair, holding him to her. Her body moved against his, a demand and a promise at the same time.

He could feel her need against his thigh, feel how wet she was for him. He wanted to be inside her. He needed to be inside her. Luke reached for the condom. His lips captured hers in kiss as he began to push into her. Grace’s body arched, her nails digging into his back as she let out a soft moan. He could feel her, hot and tight and wet, her body welcoming him, accepting him.

He began to move. The room filled with the sound of them together, obscene and beautiful. Luke could feel the tension building in his body. All day he was measured. Controlled. The careful cop who never made mistakes. The golden boy destined for the town council. But here—God, here he was greedy and desperate and completely undone. Slow down, he told himself, but his body didn’t listen. It never did with Grace. His climax was building too fast, the pressure overwhelming. “Come with me,” he breathed against her throat.

Not a request. A need. He reached between them, his fingers finding the sensitive nub at her center. He began to stroke her, feeling the way she tightened around him. She was close too, he could tell. Her breath came in short, sharp gasps. “Luke,” she gasped. He loved the sound of his name on her lips. He was right on the edge, control fraying.

“Let go, Grace. Let go with me.” Her body convulsed, her nails digging into his back as she cried out. Her body tightened around him and then he was following her, his hips pushing, thrusting inside her, his body shuddering as he lost himself in her. They lay there, their bodies entwined, their breathing in sync. Luke could feel Grace’s smile against his neck, could feel the way her body fit against his, soft and warm.

He’d never be able to bring Grace home to his parents, never be able to walk with her down Main Street. They both knew that. But in that moment, with Grace in his arms, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
