Her hands trembled and she ducked her face against my chest to avoid the stinging shards of sand whipping around us. I tried again. \u201cThere is a man following us, an enemy of magic. He would kill us for being a witch and familiar. We came to you for protection.\u201d The Desert stilled. I cupped the back of Rosamund\u2019s head, pulling her as close as I could. I was furious at myself for thinking that it would be safe to go this way.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d never gone close to the Desert without a glass witch around before. My mistake might see both Rosamund and me killed. \u201cPlease,\u201d Rosamund added, her voice muffled by my chest. She didn\u2019t pull back, but she did turn her head toward the nearest dune. \u201cHelp us escape.\u201d Nothing moved for what felt like minutes, though it might have been mere seconds.<\/p>\n

Even the wind had stopped, settling all the obsidian sand back onto the dunes instead of swirling around our faces. Finally, the dunes pulled away. First the tips of them trickled down the back sides. Then, with growing speed, entire mounds fell backward, re- formed, and fell again. Within minutes, they were fifty feet away and still fading.<\/p>\n

Rosamund and I didn\u2019t move as we watched the dunes retreat. I couldn\u2019t tell if I was shaking or she was. Perhaps both of us. We didn\u2019t have time to bask in our survival long. I was still facing the way we\u2019d come, and with the dunes retreating, I had a clear sight of Prince Vetle charging along the road toward us. \u201cShit,\u201d I said. Farther ahead, huge obsidian chunks covered the ground. The boulders had become misshapen hills.<\/p>\n

At some angles, the obsidian chunks looked like plain black rocks. At other angles, you could see sheer slabs of reflective black glass. I grabbed Rosamund\u2019s arm and tugged her with me to higher ground.<\/p>\n
