I look at the two\u2013story building before moving my bewildered stare to him. This is not what I imagined when he said we should try something different. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful place. Is it yours?\u201d I murmur. He gives me a soft nod. \u201cThis is one of the properties I own in New York. I don\u2019t live here if that\u2019s what you\u2019re asking.<\/p>\n

It just happened that it was available.\u201d \u201cOh. So it\u2019s up for rent?\u201d \u201cOccasionally, yes.\u201d He studies my face with a mystified expression. \u201cInterested in renting it?\u201d he jokes, showing me to the entrance. \u201cI might be,\u201d I say seriously, although obviously joking. \u201cThe commute might be a deal breaker, though.\u201d He laughs, sincerely amused. My heels click against the marble floors as we enter the place.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a modern house with a lot of light during the day, I imagine. Sliding doors connect the rooms to the back of the house, where the backyard and pool are easily visible. The place is roomy and breathy. From almost anywhere on the first floor, I can see the living room, the amazing open kitchen, the back patio, and the large hallway leading to the entrance. It\u2019s a laid back, comfortable design. There are no things crammed in confined spaces. Everything belongs, and I like that about the place.<\/p>\n

And then there is the furniture. Large, comfortable sofas and armchairs, decorative floor pillows, and lamps casting a soft glow around the rooms. High ceilings and a not\u2013so\u2013 steep flight of stairs connecting the first floor to the second. It\u2019s classy without being overwhelming and modern without being opulent. A little piece of heaven I would\u2019ve never known about had he not brought me here.<\/p>\n

A piano sits in the corner of the living room, and opposite to it, a working fireplace. \u201cDo you like it?\u201d he asks, moving to the sliding doors. I\u2019m still looking around, lost for words. Our eyes connect a second later, his hands on the glass doors. \u201cYou can open it,\u201d I say, my eyes moving to the strings of lights dangling from the trees behind the pool.<\/p>\n

He slides them open, and crisp air tumbles in, carrying the smoky scent of early fall while the rusty leave a trail down a stone path. Glancing around, I find the leaves everywhere\u2014littering the lounge chairs, floating in the pool, and falling from the trees. The strings of lights swing in the wind, and my pulse races, my muse awakened from her slumber. What a magnificent place with such a story to tell. It\u2019s absolutely true that some places talk to you.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how it feels when awareness seeps back into my brain and my surroundings slowly come into focus. The austere motel walls, the small space, and the bed, which is not exactly bad, yet not too comfortable either. The bathroom door slightly open, with a flicker of light sneaking through.<\/p>\n

The memory comes back to me like a blast of wind, rattling my soul before the stack of money on the nightstand catches my attention. I move my stare back to the bathroom door and simply listen, still holding out hope he\u2019s here with me. Not gone. Not sleeping in some lavish hotel suite downtown.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
