There was a questioning smile hovering around his mouth, as if he couldn\u2019t quite believe what he had just heard, as if she must surely be joking. Rebellion, from little Goody- Two-Shoes Ruthie? That just couldn\u2019t be! \u2018Oh come on . . .\u2019 he said, teasing now, coaxing. \u2018No,\u2019 she said firmly. \u2018Get to bed, Kieron. I\u2019m tired. I\u2019ve had enough.\u2019<\/p>\n

He drew back. Ruthie was refusing to go along with his plan. This was a turning point for her. At last, she was making her own feelings plain. She started to lay back down and was nearly there when suddenly he grabbed her neck with one large hand and stopped her. He had her by the throat. She couldn\u2019t breathe. His eyes had lost their teasing light and now there was clear thwarted rage in them. \u2018Would you mind telling me, Ruthie,\u2019 he said, very low in that soft seductive Southern Irish lilt of his, the tones of which had once seemed so appealing and which now did nothing for her.<\/p>\n

\u2018Just tell me, would you.\u2019 His voice dropped lower. \u2018What \u2013 exactly \u2013 is the feckin\u2019 point of you?\u2019 \u2018Kieron . . .\u2019 she gasped out. Couldn\u2019t draw breath. Could feel panic setting in. \u2018What, Ruthie?\u2019 His voice was almost silky now, loverlike. \u2018Come on, what? You won\u2019t wear your hair the way I like it, you won\u2019t wear the clothes I love to see you wearing, you keep shutting my damned dog in the kitchen and you know he hates that .<\/p>\n

. .\u2019 She wouldn\u2019t be Annie. That was what he was saying. And he was right. Ruthie might be soft, she might be stupid, but she could be obstinate too. She would not pretend to be her sister. \u2018Kieron, stop\u2014\u2019 \u2018Stop what?\u2019 He pouted now, as if surprised. \u2018Oh \u2013 am I hurting you?\u2019<\/p>\n
