I whispered. \u201cIf it lands in the tail,\u201d Sloane said, her voice dropping to a hush, \u201cit goes in the net. It is a significant event. It is unlikely to happen by chance. And if you score a goal, what happens to the tie?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s broken,\u201d I said. \u201cExactly,\u201d Sloane said. Her eyes were bright. \u201cYou reject the tie. You reject the Null Hypothesis. You say: I have enough evidence to prove that we are winning.\u201d I stared at the drawing. The Null was the tie. The Alternative was the win.<\/p>\n

The middle was the goalie making saves. The tails were the goals. It clicked. I felt a physical sensation in my brain, like a gear slamming into place. The fog that had been clouding my vision for the last hour evaporated. \u201cSo,\u201d I said slowly, leaning over the paper. \u201cThe alpha level\u2026 the 0.05\u2026\u201d \u201cThat is the size of the net,\u201d Sloane said. \u201cA small alpha level means a small net. It is hard to score. You need a really, really good shot to prove you are better.<\/p>\n

If the P-value\u2014your shot\u2014is smaller than the net\u2026\u201d \u201cIt goes in,\u201d I finished. Sloane nodded. She set the pencil down. \u201cTry the problem again,\u201d she said softly. I picked up the pencil. My hand wasn\u2019t shaking anymore. I looked at the numbers. Mean = 25. Sample = 27. I set up the Null. $H_0$: The training did nothing. The speed is still 25. (Tie Game). I set up the Alternative. $H_1$: The training worked. The speed is not 25. (We Scored).<\/p>\n

I grabbed my calculator. I punched in the Z-score formula. (27 – 25) divided by the standard error. I hit enter. I looked at the chart. I looked at the critical value for 0.05. The cutoff was 1.96. 2.15 was bigger than 1.96. My shot was past the goalie. It was in the tail. \u201cThe Z-score is 2.15,\u201d I said. I looked up at Sloane. \u201cThat\u2019s in the critical region. It\u2019s in the goal.\u201d \u201cSo what is your decision?\u201d Sloane asked. She was leaning forward, her breath held.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince 2.15 is in the rejection region,\u201d I said, my voice gaining strength, \u201cwe reject the Null Hypothesis. The evidence is significant. The training program works.\u201d I looked at her. \u201cWe won the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
