Some researchers, including panese professor Masaaki Kimura, ieve it\u2019s evidence of a lost civilisa- n, built more than 3,000 years ago en sea levels were lower. Some of them now form part of the mple complex, but archaeologists are l scratching their heads over just w these massive blocks were moved. Some think those involved did it th wooden rollers. But how were they lifted into place thout modern equipment when ey weigh more than 10 times the ocks of the Great Pyramid at Giza is l a bit of a puzzle.<\/p>\n

US author Mark Twain once visited, and marvelled: \u201cI cannot conceive how those immense blocks of stone were ever hauled from the quarry to the tem- ple site.\u201d T e Moai statues of remote Easter Island in the Paci\ufb01 c Ocean have be- come iconic, but it\u2019s still hard to see how the massive monoliths, weighing up to 80 tonnes apiece, were moved and lifted into place.<\/p>\n

T ere are about 1,000 of the carved human \ufb01 gures, below right, and they were the work of the Rapa Nui people between 1250 and 1500AD. Some archaeologists think people walked them into place with ropes using a zig- zag motion. T e purpose of the Moai is still de- bated, but experts believe they were the repositories of spirits, representing the people\u2019s dead ancestors.<\/p>\n

In Victoria, Australia, lies the Carisbrook stone arrangement, a set of boulders 197ft long and 16ft wide that appears to be in the shape of a boomerang. It\u2019s thought to be an ancient Aboriginal site related to the Djadjawurrung tribe, but no-one alive today knows what it was for. Some think it\u2019s purposely set in the shape of the hunt ing weapon, others that it represents an astronomical feature such as the Milky Way or even that its seemingly phallic shape means it was used as a place of initiation.<\/p>\n

Much smaller than Stonehenge, but just as intriguing, is a stone circle at M\u00ean-An-Tol in Cornwall, below left.<\/p>\n
