For some, it\u2019s a time to celebrate how far we\u2019ve come; to take stock, make toasts, and kiss our partners. For others, however, New Year\u2019s gives us no reason to celebrate. It serves mostly as a reminder of all the progress we haven\u2019t made that we promised ourselves we would.<\/p>\n<p>Of everything we\u2019ve lost in the last twelve months\u2014of our failed relationships, dead relatives, rejected projects, dreams that slipped through our fingers yet again, despite our best intentions. That year, like most years, I fell in the latter camp. The seven months since my twenty-ninth birthday had been unproductive, a total failure, but it wasn\u2019t over yet. I still had five months left to turn it around before thirty. These days, everybody has more or less the same New Year\u2019s resolution: Work out more or Be on phone less.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all pretty self-explanatory. We want to be healthier, happier, hotter. Working out helps with all three; the phones hurt all three. All year, the phones sapped us of life force, they rotted our brains, hurt our eyes, hunched our backs; we\u2019re all addicted, it\u2019s the biggest issue of our time, blah blah blah. But paradoxically, as the final weeks of December roll around, people seem to post more, not less.<\/p>\n<p>Why? For one powerful and irresistible reason, what I\u2019ll call the new year excuse. The new year excuse is not just any old excuse to post but rather a chance to publish anything from the entire year that you for whatever reason didn\u2019t before, and might not ever be able to again. As Eminem would say, \u201cYou only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow.<\/p>\n<p>This opportunity comes once in a lifetime, yo.\u201d The end-of-year dumps are a free-for-all for this reason.
