\u201cCome. Sit.\u201d I take the seat between them, the leather creaking under my weight. The room is silent except for the faint ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. Outside, the grounds are bathed in the golden light of late afternoon, but the shadows seem longer than they should be, darker. \u201cHow is Ezra?\u201d Konstantine asks, his gaze fixed on the horizon. \u201cHe\u2019s well,\u201d I reply. \u201cThe sea air agrees with him. He\u2019s thriving.\u201d A faint smile flickers across Konstantine\u2019s lips, but it\u2019s gone as quickly as it appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood. That\u2019s good.\u201d There\u2019s a pause, heavy and expectant. I know what\u2019s coming next. \u201cAnd Ines\u2019s murderers?\u201d Lazarus asks, his voice low and steady. \u201cHave you made progress?\u201d I lean forward, resting my elbows on my knees. \u201cWe have names now. We know who\u2019s responsible.\u201d Konstantine turns to me, his eyes narrowing. \u201cWho?\u201d I take a deep breath, steeling myself for his reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s her family. They\u2019re involved.\u201d I expect denial, outrage, disbelief. But Konstantine simply nods, his expression grim. \u201cI always feared this,\u201d he says quietly. \u201cInes, she feared them too. They tried to control her, to control me through her. When she refused to bend to their will, they must have decided she was better off dead.\u201d Lazarus shakes his head, muttering something I don\u2019t catch under his breath as he gets to his feet, walking away to stare out the window as if he can see the very wolves creeping through the flowerbeds, coming to destroy us all.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve gone to ground,\u201d I add.<\/p>\n
