Something I hadn\u2019t expected. He wasn\u2019t enjoying this. His jaw was tight. His left hand, the one not holding the ledger, was pressed flat against his thigh. Tony Delvago was uncomfortable. He\u2019d done this because the math demanded it, not because he wanted to. That made it worse. A vindictive person you can fight. A principled person presenting evidence is a wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a workshop,\u201d I said. \u201cI have a forge. I have techniques that were taught to me by a craftsman in Ironhallow who doesn\u2019t sell commercially. My process is my own and I\u2019m not obligated to demonstrate it publicly.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re not,\u201d Tony agreed. \u201cBut you did accept a Forge Annual prize judged partly on the assumption that the work was your own. And you have accepted commissions from patrons who believe they\u2019re purchasing original handcrafted metalwork.<\/p>\n

If the work isn\u2019t what it appears to be, those people deserve to know.\u201d The quad was completely still now. I could feel the weight of it \u2014 two hundred pairs of eyes, two hundred brains doing the calculation. The conditional-admit from Ironhallow. The impossible production rate. The workshop with no hammering. The commissions that appeared from nowhere, fully formed, with no evidence of creation. Sam\u2019s hand tightened on my knee. \u201cI can vouch for his work,\u201d Sam said. Her voice was level. Controlled. The voice she used when she was furious and refusing to show it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been to his workshop. I\u2019ve seen him work. The process is unconventional but the products are genuine.\u201d Tony looked at Sam. His expression softened \u2014 not dismissively, but with what appeared to be genuine regret. \u201cI respect that, Sam. And I respect your judgment. But a vouching isn\u2019t evidence. And the absence of a verifiable process isn\u2019t a process.\u201d \u201cWhat do you want, Tony?\u201d I said. \u201cSpecifically. What are you asking for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m asking you to explain. Or demonstrate. Show us how you make the work. Open your workshop. Invite a faculty member to observe. Give people a reason to believe what you\u2019re claiming, because right now the only thing supporting your story is your word, and your word is contradicted by every piece of evidence I\u2019ve found.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence stretched. A bird called somewhere across campus. The fountain behind me made its steady, indifferent sound.
