Lovely to meet you.’ The young girl gave him a small wave. Jennifer leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before taking her daughter’s hand and leading her back out through the store. Cash felt a million things as he stood and watched them go. OceanofPDF.com A few hours after the band’s performance at Amoeba, Cash received a phone call from Slim.

He was exhausted from the day, half asleep on his sofa as a Townes Van Zandt album played quietly on his turntable. When he picked up the phone there was something in Slim’s voice that made him sit up immediately. He sounded distant and hollow, like he was calling from a grey void.

‘Sorry to bug you, man. I know it’s been a big day.’ ‘You don’t sound so good,’ said Cash. ‘What’s going on?’ ‘I’m OK. Don’t worry, it’s not what you think – I’m not using.’ Cash breathed an audible sigh of relief. He felt his body relax as he leaned back into the sofa. ‘But I do have a problem,’ continued Slim.

‘We need to talk. Can you meet me?’ An hour later they were sitting across from each other at their usual table at Goldie’s. The bar was busy, and they had to speak loudly to be heard over the music and the contained roar of conversation that swirled around them. ‘What’s on your mind?’ said Cash. ‘You’ve got me worried.’ Slim slowly sipped a coke. His ivory skin shone softly in the glimmer of the table lamp. ‘You remember when I told you how expensive my habit was getting?’

‘I remember.’ ‘Well, the money ran out. A while ago. I’ve been able to get by on some royalties that have been coming in the last couple of months, but otherwise I’m basically broke.’ ‘You should have told me,’ said Cash. ‘I would have helped you out.’

First published in Great Britain in 2025 by Close To The Bone Copyright © 2025 Daniel Gard’ner Daniel Gard’ner asserts the moral right to be identified as the author of this work in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 All rights reserved. He was hunched over the guitar, his hands a blur as he cast out wave after wave of steely, reverb-drenched noise. He turned toward his amplifier to extract sheets of piercing feedback before ending his solo in a cascade of descending notes that twisted and broke apart from one another in a discordant spiral. Andy was motionless behind his microphone, staring out impassively at the crowd as they lurched and swayed like a giant, unknowable beast.

He could feel the force of the band behind him, a visceral power that moved through his body like a tremor. Rob had his back turned to the audience, lost in the deep rumble of his bass as the song transitioned out of Slim’s solo and into the final chorus. As Vital Minds neared the end of a long encore on a sweltering night in Atlanta, the seats in the Fox Theatre had been made redundant – every member of the sold-out crowd was on their feet.

The band were road testing material from their upcoming record on a short run of east coast dates, and the response every night had been overwhelming – the new songs had blended seamlessly with the more established material, maintaining the band’s signature lean power but adding an intoxicating melodic sheen that audiences connected to instantly. Behind his kit on the drum riser, Cash watched over everything.

As he eased into the sleazy shuffle of the chorus he caught a glimpse of the fans at the front of the stage, their faces briefly illuminated by shards of flashing light. He could sense the mass of people toward the back of the venue, and as he raised his eyes to the balcony he could just make out a blur of bodies pressed together in the darkness. He locked eyes with Rob as the chorus gave way to an extended outro and Andy began singing over a simple chord pattern from Slim, a hauntingly spare melody that drifted out into the darkness like a siren call.

The crowd sang the phrase back at him, a swirling mass of voices that filled the entire room. But as Andy prepared to sing the song’s final lines, the chiming echo of Slim’s guitar suddenly disappeared, leaving a gaping void of sound and energy.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
