You don\u2019t scare me.\u201d His eyes soften in a way that makes my breath catch. \u201cGood.\u201d He reaches for his wine, never breaking eye contact. \u201cBecause I\u2019m not going anywhere.\u201d It might feel like a threat. Perhaps it should.<\/p>\n

One stern look from me is enough to stop her. \u201cYou\u2019re not washing anything,\u201d I say, turning on the faucet. \u201cYou fed me. She hands me a plate, I wash, she dries. Simple. Ordinary. Something normal people do without thinking. But I\u2019m not a normal person. At least that\u2019s what I think. I\u2019ve emptied bullets into the hearts of men, but I have never done this. I steal a glance. This moment feels special. I rinse a pan; she reaches for it and bumps my elbow. \u201cSorry,\u201d she says, cheeks a little flushed. \u201cRelax,\u201d I tell her. \u201cI don\u2019t bite.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes flick up. \u201cYou definitely bite.\u201d I pause, water running over my hand. \u201cDo I?\u201d She realizes what she said and goes pink from the neck up. \u201cI meant\u2014 you seem like you could. In a metaphorical way. Not\u2014never mind.\u201d I smirk. \u201cNoted.\u201d She tries to hide her face behind a plate. It doesn\u2019t work. Domestic. That\u2019s what this is. And it shouldn\u2019t feel this easy.<\/p>\n

You mess up the gnocchi?\u201d I keep stirring the pan in front of me because if I stop moving, I might scream. \u201cNo, chef. It went out perfect.\u201d He slams the plate on the pass hard enough to rattle the metal. \u201cSome lady out there thinks it\u2019s chewy. So either you screwed it up or the food magically changed texture in the dining room.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s gnocchi,\u201d I say. \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be soft with a little bite.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain that to her,\u201d he snaps, leaning close enough that the sharp smell of alcohol hits me. \u201cWithout sounding like a smartass,\u201d he emphasizes . His gaze drops, slow and obvious, and I feel my whole body stiffen. \u201cDeep breaths, Savvy,\u201d I tell myself. You need this job. Quitting is not an option for you, Savvy. \u201cI\u2019ll talk to her,\u201d I say tightly, my skin prickling in awareness of him. He taps my chin with two fingers.<\/p>\n
