The creature was light green, with darker green stripes, and it had a small bump on the back of its skull. It was standing over something that it was chewing with beaky jaws. The strange dinosaur took a step back from Wanna. ‘Look at that footprint its back foot made,’ Jamie whispered. ‘It’s a little version of the ones we found.’

‘It’s a baby Parasaurolophus!’ Tess said with delight. ‘That little bump will grow into a crest when it gets bigger!’ Grunk-grunk-grunk-grunk-grunk! Wanna’s grunks sounded almost like a growl. The baby backed farther away, pulling the item it was chewing with it. Something that had zippers and a flap on the front… ‘That’s my backpack!’ Jamie said. Tess laughed. ‘Wanna’s trying to protect your stuff!’ ‘Or warning the baby not to eat Granddad’s sandwiches.’ Jamie quickly pulled off a young juicy fern frond and waved it in front of the baby’s nose.

‘Hey, little dino! Eat this instead!’ The baby Parasaurolophus grabbed the frond in its jaws and quickly chomped it up. It looked at Jamie, eyes bright with hope. Bright green fern juice ran down its chin. ‘Wow, you made quick work of that!’ Jamie held out another fern frond. The baby stood on its hind legs to snatch at it, splattering Jamie with globs of green.

‘Yuk!’ Jamie brushed off the dino drool and picked some more young fern leaves. ‘You want one, Wanna?’ Grunk. It sounded like a no. Instead, Wanna turned his back and gobbled up a fallen ginkgo fruit. Stinky, slimy, orange ginkgo juice squelched out of the corner of his jaws. ‘Dinosaurs are very slobbery,’ Tess said. Whooooooooop! The trumpeting had started up again. ‘I think they’re calling for their baby,’ Tess said slowly. ‘It must have gotten separated from the herd when they ran away from the T.

rex. We have to get the baby back to them!’ The baby Parasaurolophus put its head to one side and gave a little squeaky wheeep! It sounded just like a guinea pig. Tess thrust a young fern frond into its beak, then another. The baby’s cheeks were bulging like a hamster’s and its stomach was very round.

‘We could dangle fern leaves in front of it and lead it back to the herd,’ she suggested. ‘I’ll check where the rest of the herd is. I should be able to see them from the top of this tree.’ Jamie swiftly scaled the tree.

Text alignment: Auto-justification [OFF] (if the eBook reader has this feature) Auto-hyphenation: [OFF] (if the eBook reader has this feature) Font style: Publisher default setting [ON] (if the eBook reader has this feature) In Settings, change the font size to a size you are most comfortable with.
