Or are you eating for other reasons — such as stress, habit, or peer pressure? Listen closely and your brain also tells you what to eat After getting a true hunger signal, how do we manage to get the nutrients that our brain has identified as lacking? Is it that we randomly choose what to eat based on what is in the pantry, what restaurants are nearby, or who we are with?

The answer is, your brain does attempt to guide you towards the right foods either through the unconscious decisions you make about what to eat — or via conscious cravings you have for specific foods. The brain has learned from your past eating habits and knows which foods will provide you with the missing nutrients. It has correlated the information stored in memory of foods you have already eaten and their nutrient components. These correlations began forming at the beginning of your life and continue to be made on an ongoing basis, building a database of nutrient-food correspondences that the brain uses to guide you.

In effect, the brain’s regulatory system tracks your food and fluid intake during each meal and compares it, when possible, to the nutrients received from past experiences with the same foods. Your brain knows what nutritional value you get from a hamburger, a spaghetti dinner, a bowl of wonton soup, a burrito, chicken curry, or whatever foods are in your cultural background. This capability of the brain is no different than how a toddler can listen to the same story or music over and over and the child’s brain learns the words so that he or she can complete the story or song when listening to it later.

In the same way, your brain becomes a databank of foods and their nutritional values — and pushes you to desire certain edibles when you need their nutrients. Consider all those times when you find yourself asking, “What should I have for dinner tonight?” and an answer pops into your head without any trouble: “I need some meat,” or “I feel like having some cheese tonight,” or “Tonight’s a good night for chicken and a salad.”

That is your brain telling you what nutrients it needs because it knows what nutrients those foods provide. These messages are different for each person, of course, reflecting their past eating experiences, cultural background, and food preferences. The brain guides each of us first towards foods from which it knows it can obtain the necessary nutrients.

For instance, onions, garlic, rice, and curry are meaningful sources of nutrients for some people and their brain will desire foods containing them.

Editorial Direction and Editing: Rick Benzel Creative Services Cover and Book Design: Susan Shankin & Associates Text Illustrations: Tim Kummerow and Cristian Voicu Published by New Insights Press, Los Angeles, CA Copyright © 2024 by John Poothullil.
