As the number of older adults continues to rise, it is essential to develop more effective, evidence-based strategies that can address their health and social care needs. However, despite increasing awareness of the challenges, several critical research gaps remain. For example, there is insufficient research on how to effectively integrate preventive healthcare programs targeted at older adults into existing health systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

In addition, research on the mental health needs of the elderly, particularly in the context of chronic illness and caregiving, is limited, and more longitudinal studies are needed to understand the long-term effects of aging on mental health. Furthermore, while much attention has been given to the physical health of older adults, there is a need for more comprehensive research on social determinants of health and their impact on aging populations, including access to community resources, social networks, and housing conditions. Addressing these gaps is essential for developing comprehensive policies that can improve the quality of life for the elderly and reduce the burden on healthcare systems worldwide.

This chapter aims to examine the key public health issues associated with an aging population, with a focus on chronic diseases, functional decline, and mental health challenges. In addition, it will explore the impact of these challenges on healthcare systems and the broader workforce, emphasizing the need for policy reforms. It will also discuss potential inter- ventions and strategies to address these issues, including age-friendly healthcare systems, increased support for caregivers, and preventive health measures.

By identifying existing research gaps and exploring potential solutions, this chapter aims to contribute to the development of policies that can improve the health and well-being of older adults globally. 13.2 Preventive healthcare measures Preventive healthcare plays a crucial role in promoting the health and well-being of older adults. As individuals age, the risk of developing chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and dementia increases.

Acquisitions Editor: Patricia Osborn Editorial Project Manager: Shubham Dixit Production Project Manager: Fahmida Sultana Cover Designer: Mark Rogers Typeset by Integra Software Services Academic Press is an imprint of Elsevier 125 London Wall, London EC2Y 5AS, United Kingdom 50 Hampshire Street, 5th Floor, Cambridge, MA 02139, United States Copyright © 2026 Elsevier Inc.
