The head was on the left side of the sofa as seen from the door to the antechamber. She was lying on her back. Both lower legs were drawn up slightly. The body was completely still. The eyes were open.

My immediate impression was that Eva Braun, as well as Hitler, was dead. The body was dressed as before in a blue dress with white facings and stockings. The shoes were lying on the sofa, a short distance away from her feet. Hitler himself sat in an armchair standing to the left and slightly forward – as seen from the antechamber – but very close to the sofa.

His body was slightly slumped together and slanted slightly to the right over the armrest. The right arm hung down over the armrest. The head was canted slightly forward to the right. I noticed an injury to the head slightly above the outer end of the angle of the right eyelid.

I saw blood and a dark discolouration. The whole thing was about the size of an old three-mark piece. The mouth was slightly open. There was a small puddle of blood on the floor to the right of the armchair. Linge then immediately returned to the antechamber and picked up the blanket that had been made ready there.

At this point, I left the antechamber in order to summon the people I had put on call (Högl, Schadle, Lindloff, Reisser) and to inform those waiting in the briefing room. The latter I did by reporting: ‘The Führer is dead!’3 Later, he provided some additional information: ‘Bormann and Linge prepared to enter Hitler’s office. I followed them, and the following image presented itself to me … Hitler was sitting I would say slightly sagging, but that wasn’t very remarkable – on the armchair, leaning slightly towards the right, his right-hand dangling over the right arm, his head leaning slightly to the right over his right shoulder.

As far as I remember, his mouth was slightly open, his chin slightly slack … Eva Braun was … on the sofa facing the door at the end of the room, her head turned towards Hitler … the shoes-light woman’s shoes were on the sofa’.4 Günsche also recalled a small Dresden vase, which had been filled only that morning with tulips and white narcissi from what remained of the Chancellery garden greenhouse, had tipped over, spilling water on Eva’s black chiffon dress, near the thigh, having fallen onto the carpet, unbroken.

This book is copyright. Their return took them through the recently reunified Germany, including its newly reestablished capital, Berlin. They spent three days in the city visiting the usual tourist attractions, including several museums, Checkpoint Charlie, and parts of the surviving Berlin Wall. Almost as an afterthought, before leaving the city, he thought, why not visit the site where Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his Führerbunker. Just one problem, he had no idea where it was.

He studied his maps and the city’s tourist literature, but there was no information about its location. Not a big deal, he thought, he would ask around, and someone would point him in the right direction. All he knew was that it was somewhere near the Brandenburg Gate. He approached a taxi driver and presented his Italian touring map of the city, asking if he could please mark on the map where the bunker was. The helpful taxi driver marked a dot, surrounded by a circle.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
