The advantage of considering the medical consultation from the point of view of its social psychology, is that it can be placed within a general body of knowledge about human interaction. In particular, the principles that underly interpersonal episodes (Harr\u00e9, 1977) can be used to provide an account of the transactions that occur between doctors and patients. Research in social psychology (e.g. Secord and Backman, 1964) has established that when two or more persons interact with each other, their behaviour is greatly influenced by how they define their own and one another\u2019s roles.<\/p>\n
