This is unlike Wyatt. He\u2019s so fun-loving, the one to always tell a joke, the one to always laugh and make light of a heavy situation. He\u2019s usually the sunshine to Winston\u2019s gray clouds. It\u2019s odd to see the roles reversed. \u201cDad, what\u2019s going on? Wyatt? What the hell happened? Who died? Oh my god, is it Mom? Is Mom okay? Waylon?\u201d Winston panics, fear making his voice tremble at the thought of losing the only family he\u2019s ever really had.<\/p>\n

I know my boss is adopted, and the way he cares and loves his family is shown every single day. Every day at noon according to the schedule, he calls his mother. Their conversations are always short. He\u2019s always checking in, always saying how much he loves her, always asking if she needs anything.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a good son and a good brother. \u201cWe need to talk in private.\u201d His father\u2019s eyes cut to me, an untrusting glint in his eyes. \u201cNo,\u201d Wyatt interrupts, placing his hand on his dad\u2019s shoulder. \u201cShe\u2019s good. We can trust her.\u201d \u201cEveryone\u2019s okay,\u201d Winston\u2019s father starts. \u201cEveryone is safe. I promise. No one has\u2014\u201d He stops himself, eyes sliding to Wyatt. \u201cNo one in the family has died.\u201d I\u2019m not the only one who catches Winston Sr.\u2019s near slip.<\/p>\n

Winston takes a deep breath. \u201cOkay, let\u2019s go to my office. Let\u2019s talk about what\u2019s going on. Olivia? Clear my schedule for the day.\u201d \u201cYes, Dr.\u2014\u201d His father holds up a wrinkled hand. \u201cNonsense. No need to clear the entire day. Make yourself one too. If my sons trust you, then I do too. You might as well come in and hear everything.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m assuming Winston would tell you, anyway.\u201d \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t share if it was private,\u201d I clarify. I don\u2019t want his dad to think I know all the family secrets. I know some, but I know I don\u2019t know all. I consider Winston my friend, but I know at the end of the day, this man is my boss. I\u2019d never abuse his trust. Not intentionally. \u201cI\u2019ll be right in.<\/p>\n

It will only be a few minutes. Can I get you a towel while we wait? You guys are soaked. Maybe some scrubs, since your clothes are drenched?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hopefully, not too much of the best of it. Anytime I have too much to drink, I drunk text my ex-boyfriend who cheated on me with the woman he told me not worry about. Isn\u2019t that how it always goes?
