Daddy This eighth excerpt got me thinking about my own religious views. Like Daddy, I tended to be skeptical. I asked questions. I sure didn\u2019t know all the answers. I hadn\u2019t joined a church in Ellijay, preferring to talk directly with the Creator on my long walks on Mother Earth. Wednesday, April 24, 1968 \u2013 4:35 a.m. Dear Laurie Alison \u2013 In a word: \u201cperfect!\u201d Seldom in life does actual experience come even close to meeting expectations when such momentous events as visiting a darling daughter\u2019s college for the first time but our visit to KSC and Pittsburg added up to something extra special in the category of rare happenings.<\/p>\n

As you know, I am not easily impressed nor do I strew superlatives all over the place without reason, but the whole bit, from beginning to end, was just flat wonderful. And Mommy\u2026.was equally impressed. Matter of fact, \u201cperfect\u201d was the word she used last night to describe the visit as we sat in front of the glowing fireplace and rehashed all the nice things that happened to us.<\/p>\n

\u2026.Tell Jack that if all the Christians were like him in personality and approach I might be converted from my present belief in Ra, the sun god. Seriously, hon, I regret that it has been necessary for me to formulate my own personal form of religion because I can\u2019t tolerate mumbo-jumbo and hypocrisy\u2026.I keep asking myself, though, where was the church when some of the ills to which we are now heirs were in the developmental stage.<\/p>\n

And I have yet to have a man of the cloth, of whatever faith, give me an answer I can accept as to why outrageous sufferings are visited on little children. This really bugs me. So much for now, sweetie, \u2019Tis time for the Distinguished Angler to get with it\u2026.., Love, Dad In this ninth excerpt, Daddy\u2019s words in the following letter, \u201cindividualist\u201d and \u201cnonconformist,\u201d certainly rang true to me as well as him.<\/p>\n

I had not been interested in working for a big corporation precisely because I thought I would lose myself. And, like Daddy, I lived for stimulation and challenge. That\u2019s where I was at in that moment, desperately wanting more stimulation and challenge. Sunday \u2013 4\/29\/68 \u2013 2:07 a.m.<\/p>\n
