Inside. Now.” They climbed out of the hot tub, dripping and shivering in the cool evening air. Vivian grabbed a towel from the storage bin next to the hot tub and wrapped it around June’s shoulders, rubbing warmth into her arms.

June caught her wrist, pulled her close, kissed her again. Her body was cold and wet, her nipples tight and hard as she pressed against Vivian, and it took everything Vivian had not to push her against the deck railing and finish what they’d started. “Bedroom,” June gasped between kisses. “Please.” They stumbled up the stairs, across the deck and into the cabin, leaving wet footprints across the floor.

Through the living room, past the couch that would have been easier, toward the bedroom instead. Vivian’s bedroom, on this trip. Her space. The place she’d been hiding from the world for four days. The door closed behind them, and June was kissing her again, backing her toward the bed. Vivian let herself fall, pulling June down on top of her, and the weight of her, the solid reality of another body against hers, had Vivian gasping for air, drowning in want.

June was shaking, but not from cold. The room was warm, and their bodies were generating enough heat to rival the hot tub. But she was trembling as Vivian switched their positions, laid her back on the bed, and then Vivian’s hand slipped beneath the wet cotton of her bra, thumb just barely on the swell of June’s breast.

“We can stop,” Vivian said. Her voice came out rougher than she intended. “If you want to stop-” “I never want to stop.” June’s eyes were wide, dark with want. “I’ve never wanted anything as much as I want this.” Vivian kissed her again. Slower this time. Learning the shape of her mouth, the sounds she made when Vivian touched her certain ways. She slid her right hand down and under June’s body, then brought the left to join it, deftly unclipping June’s bra with steady hands.

he cabin was exactly what Dr. Reyes had ordered. Remote and silent, the kind of place where no one would hear her fall apart. Vivian dropped her bag on the hardwood floor and stood in the middle of the living room, taking it in. Floor-to-ceiling windows with a lake view that belonged on a postcard. An A-frame ceiling soaring above her like a cathedral for the emotionally damaged. Perfect. She walked through the space slowly, running her fingers along the back of the leather couch. The fireplace was real, not gas.

She could see the ash residue from previous fires. The kitchen had granite counters and stainless steel appliances, everything gleaming and untouched. A basket on the counter held local coffee and chocolates, the kind of thoughtful touches that someone in marketing had decided said welcome, we’re glad you’re here.

No one was glad she was here. That was the point. She’d told her assistant she was taking a working vacation. Told her board she needed to review the quarterly projections somewhere without distractions. Told herself she might do those things. The truth sat heavier. Two years of not feeling anything had finally cracked something loose. Her therapist had used words like delayed grief and emotional suppression and you need to stop running before your body forces you to stop.

So here she was. Stopping. The kitchen was fully stocked. She found a bottle of pinot noir in the wine rack and opened it, poured a glass without bothering to let it breathe then took it to the deck. The lake stretched out below, late afternoon sun turning the water to hammered gold. Mountains rose on the far shore, still snow-capped even in late spring.

A hawk circled somewhere overhead, riding thermals, completely unconcerned with human problems. Natalie would have loved this place. The thought hit like it always did. A sucker punch to the solar plexus. Two years and it still caught her off guard, the way grief could hide in the most ordinary moments and then leap out, teeth bared. Natalie would have photographed this from sixteen different angles. Would have made Vivian pose by that tree.

Would have laughed at how stiff she looked in every shot. They’d were supposed to honeymoon somewhere like this.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
