There were whispers for a moment. Another chant rang forth. \u201cThrow the first torch, Lady Sylvia. Throw the very first one.\u201d Sylvia blinked. What! What was the crowd saying? Nothing happened for a moment more, and then a pathway opened to her. A townsman approached, holding a burning firebrand high. She shook her head and pushed out both of her hands, but the torchbearer kept coming. \u201cWait!\u201d She shouted. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d \u201cThe alchemists are the ones responsible for our dirty air,\u201d the townsman shouted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe least they could have done was to produce unlimited lozenges for whomever wanted them.\u201d The torch sailed through the air and hit one of the older shops. The rotting forewall burst into flame. Sylvia was stunned. From nowhere, several more torches had been lit. They launched in a coordinated salvo. \u201cStop,\u201d she cried. \u201cWhen I, when I win as fiefholder, we can, we can sit down and talk together \u2014 \u201d It was too late.<\/p>\n

The missiles landed against more of the nearest walls. Fine wooden paneling smoldered for only an instant before roaring out of control. Rocks crashed through windows. A nearby log became a battering ram and thundered against one of the shops having the entrance in the back. More people lured by the mayhem poured in from side streets to join in the riot.<\/p>\n

More men-at-arms appeared, but they were too few. Overwhelmed by the rising fury, they fell back. This was not her doing, Sylvia tried to reason with herself. Oppression had smoldered for years. Her line of denied voters for an election was merely the fuse that set everything off. The fire along the row of alchemy shops grew into an inferno. Everyone had to retreat from the flames because of the heat.<\/p>\n

For a long while, everyone watched silently. Then Sylvia heard the snap of a whip and saw two frightened horses pulling a wagon onto the street from the path to the rear. \u2018Gibbon Glue\u2019 a sign on two large vats proclaimed as the caisson clopped past, not avoiding anyone who chanced in the way.<\/p>\n

Another wagon followed stacked with cages. The ferrets, Sylvia realized. As the dray rumbled past, she recognized several chests frosted and cold on all sides. Jumbled with them were bags of quicklime crystals spilling their contents as they jostled by. Three more wagons appeared, one after another. On the first were stacked large, unmarked wooden crates.<\/p>\n
