I could live with him not trusting my guys. But did he still trust me? I turned to him, camouflaged camera and battery pack still in hand. The sun was coming up, the daylight thin and bleak, and he was searching our surroundings as vigilantly as a trained soldier. His expression was hard to read, which was nothing new for Leo. \u201cHey.\u201d I touched his waist.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re still with me, right?\u201d He looked up at me, and a faint smile broke through. \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I be?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d I brushed a few strands of hair off his forehead and tucked them under his cover. \u201cJust\u2026everyone\u2019s getting twitchy and paranoid.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of nowhere and the mafia probably found us. Of course we\u2019re twitchy and paranoid.\u201d He slid a hand up the front of my buttoned blouse and curved it behind my neck. \u201cBut if I wasn\u2019t still with you, I wouldn\u2019t be out here in the woods with you and that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He tapped a fingernail on the rifle slung over my shoulder. \u201cAnd I sure as hell wouldn\u2019t have slept next to you.\u201d I couldn\u2019t help shivering. We\u2019d done more than sleep last night. It hadn\u2019t seemed like the time\u2014did it ever, when it came to us?\u2014but we\u2019d needed the break from all the insanity and fear, and sex was the best escape either of us could think of. I wondered if Leo and I would ever know a time when sex happened just because we wanted it to, not because we were seizing a frantic opportunity that could very well be our last.<\/p>\n

We both cleared our throats and broke eye contact. \u201cWe should get these set up,\u201d he said. \u201cYeah. We\u2014\u201d I stiffened. A low hum tickled the edges of my senses. I lifted my gaze, searching the slowly brightening sky and the spaces between evergreen branches for the telltale movement of a drone. The hum came closer, though, and resolved itself into the distinct sound of a car engine.<\/p>\n

Beside me, Leo had straightened too, and we both stood stone still, searching and listening like alarmed prairie dogs. The distant engine whined with exertion. Not just from climbing the steep mountain\u2014it was climbing fast. Then tires squealed. I touched the button on my earpiece, \u201cIncoming vehicle. High rate of speed.\u201d \u201cHow far?\u201d Sarge asked. \u201cNot sure. It\u2019s coming up from the south and\u2014\u201d The first volley of gunfire sent Leo and me to the deck.<\/p>\n
