It was rare to meet someone who could stand toe-to-toe with Sam, who didn\u2019t flinch under her intensity but instead matched it with their own. Layla wasn\u2019t just incredible\u2014she was magnetic. Sam sighed, pushing off the mirror and grabbing her bag. She wasn\u2019t sure when it had happened\u2014when teasing Layla had become something more, something she couldn\u2019t quite put into words. But she knew one thing for certain: whatever was building between them, it wasn\u2019t going away. As Layla rode the subway home, the city lights flashing past the windows, she found herself scrolling through her phone absentmindedly.<\/p>\n

She stopped on Sam\u2019s number, her thumb hovering over the call button. What would she even say? Thanks for making me feel like I\u2019m not falling apart. Thanks for making me want to let my guard down when I know better. She shook her head, locking the screen and slipping her phone back into her bag.<\/p>\n

Whatever this was, it was too complicated to figure out tonight. She just needed to focus on the routine, on saving The Velvet Ember, on everything but the way Sam\u2019s words lingered in her mind like a melody she couldn\u2019t shake. Sam, walking through the dimly lit streets toward her apartment, couldn\u2019t help but replay the day in her head.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d meant what she said\u2014every word. Layla was incredible, and it wasn\u2019t just her talent on stage. It was the way she fought for every inch of her space, the way she refused to let the world tell her who to be. Sam didn\u2019t just admire her; she respected her.<\/p>\n

Maybe that was why it scared her to realize how much she cared. When Layla finally got home, she dropped her bag by the door and sank onto the couch, letting out a long breath. She didn\u2019t have the energy to over- analyze the day anymore.<\/p>\n
