I almost launch out of the seat from excitement. Finally. Will we talk now? I made everything so awkward by imagining him in ways I shouldn\u2019t. \u201cCain\u2019s havin\u2019 some people over tomorrow night,\u201d he continues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothin\u2019 fancy. Just a cookout for everyone helpin\u2019 with the festival.\u201d \u201cExplain a cookout to me.\u201d \u201cEveryone brings food to share. A salad or somethin\u2019.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s your signature salad?\u201d He turns slightly, his eyebrow arched. \u201cDo I look like a man who eats a lot of salad?\u201d I laugh. With a big, broad chest like his? Not likely. \u201cWell, what do you take along then?\u201d He lifts a shoulder. \u201cSteaks, maybe? I usually get conned into helpin\u2019 out with the grill.<\/p>\n<p>Think you\u2019ll come?\u201d \u201cTry to stop me.\u201d When his attention shifts back to the road, the tense silence resettles into the car. Sawyer drums the steering wheel to the beat of whatever terrible song plays over the speakers, and, every so often, he sneaks a look at me from the corner of his eye. I knew this was going to be awkward. I slip the pink box out of my bag and hold it over my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>The next time Sawyer\u2019s gaze slides in my direction, I waggle my eyebrows. \u201cOkay.\u201d He sighs, but he\u2019s grinning. \u201cLet\u2019s try your conversation cards.\u201d \u201cYes!\u201d I pop the lid off the box and flip over the first card. \u201cHere we go!\u201d I clear my throat. \u201cDo you play an instrument?\u201d \u201cI play a bit of guitar.\u201d A bit.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve seen the guitar at his place.
