I leave my sunglasses off. Then, I stretch out on the blanket and gesture for Griff to join me. He does and puts his sunglasses to the side. I look at the sky. Clouds dance overhead. I raise my hand and point to one. \u201cThat one looks like a bird.\u201d \u201cHuh?\u201d \u201cThe cloud.\u201d<\/p>\n

I point again. \u201cSee how the cloud stretches out just so, like a wing, and the beak is there and . . .\u201d I look away from the clouds to Griff\u2019s face. \u201cYou\u2019ve never cloud gazed?\u201d \u201cI have, but not since I was little. Probably five or six.\u201d I make a scoffing noise. \u201cYou\u2019re out of practice. It\u2019s my duty to fix that. I\u2019ll even make it fun.\u201d \u201cFun?\u201d \u201cYes. Fun. That three letter word that basically means you\u2019re having a good time.\u201d \u201cBy cloud gazing,\u201d he says, disbelief heavy in his tone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I say, bumping his shoulder with mine. \u201cWith cloud gazing. Just look at some of the clouds, Griff. What do you see?\u201d \u201cClouds.\u201d \u201cGriffffff,\u201d I say. \u201cYou\u2019ve never looked up above and seen something more? Sometimes, I\u2019ll glance overhead and try to find pictures in the sky. See that wisp over there?<\/p>\n

Tell me that doesn\u2019t look like a unicorn\u2019s horn.\u201d \u201cA unicorn\u2019s horn?\u201d Griff makes a sound. \u201cPlease. That looks like a dagger.\u201d \u201cYou say dagger, I say unicorn\u2019s horn.\u201d I move my hand to the left. \u201cAnd that cloud looks like a dollop of whipped-cream.\u201d \u201cIt looks like a tit,\u201d Griff says. My laugh sputters out of me. I can\u2019t even believe Griff said tit. \u201cListen, you dirty librarian you, that is definitely not a tit.\u201d Griff leans up on one elbow, his gaze fastened onto me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, I saw what I saw. Don\u2019t take away my tit cloud.\u201d He plops back down. \u201cSo, I\u2019m game for the cloud gazing thing. You said you\u2019d make it fun.\u201d I hear the challenge in his voice. \u201cThree words: Strip cloud gazing.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m listening. What are the rules?\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s simple. We look at the clouds, and whoever sees something first, points it out and then the other has to remove an article of clothing.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve already taken off your shoes.<\/p>\n

And you\u2019re only wearing that dress. I think this will be a very short game.\u201d \u201cSays the guy who doesn\u2019t ever do this.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m motivated.\u201d His hand slides over my arm, making my skin shiver with awareness. \u201cBut I\u2019d like to add another rule to this game.\u201d \u201cWhat?\u201d I ask. \u201cThe person who loses the round can also not remove an article of clothing\u2014\u201d \u201cThat defeats the purpose.\u201d \u201cBut the person has to reveal something about themselves. Nothing easy, like what\u2019s your favorite color.\u201d I swallow past my flutter of heartbeats.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, basically a version of Truth or Dare.\u201d \u201cOr, really, Truth or Strip,\u201d Griff says.<\/p>\n
