Spartacus chuckled darkly and shook his head. \u201cYou have no idea how much worse I could make things for you. You\u2019re trapped here to keep you safe. Do you really want to have your freedom and then end up dead?\u201d I ran a hand through my hair, wondering if stabbing him would be worth it. Now that I knew it wouldn\u2019t kill him after what I saw last night, it was tempting. How else could I convey the level of pissed off that I was? A dagger to the kidney.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really want to stab you right now,\u201d I said instead, pacing back and forth across the tent. \u201cWho do you think you\u2019re really protecting? Not me. People try to kill me inside this damn camp!\u201d \u201cAnd where do you think you\u2019ll go outside of the camp? The nobles will kill you and any travelers you might see will kill you or sell you to the nearest brothel.<\/p>\n

At least here you have a chance at living.\u201d \u201cDo you even hear yourself? I have a chance at living? Only a chance? I don\u2019t want to die here, Spartacus. I want to live. I want to explore and see my friends and start a family!\u201d \u201cWell, maybe when the war is over we can discuss where I can leave you so you can have all of those things.<\/p>\n

Until then, you are with me. I can\u2019t make sure that you\u2019re safe any other way.\u201d I stared at him, wondering what was going through his head. How could he think that he could keep a person trapped here with him? Spartacus rolled his shoulders back, the joints cracking as a stubborn look set on his face. His eyes glowed a bright red as his hands curled into fists. \u201cYou aren\u2019t going anywhere, Esme. That\u2019s final.\u201d He stormed out of the tent as I considered setting the entire camp on fire.<\/p>\n

I could try running again but after seeing a fraction of what he was capable of, I knew it was futile. There was nowhere he couldn\u2019t track me. Spartacus was only gone for a few minutes before he came back with Aurelia trailing behind him. Her face was pale and she looked at the ground as Spartacus threw the pot of salve on the ground between us. The clay shattered and the salve leaked onto the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that was pretty stupid,\u201d I said as I kicked dirt over the salve. \u201cThat\u2019s poison. Let\u2019s just throw poison that seeps into your skin on the ground where we sleep. You really are so smart, aren\u2019t you?\u201d If looks could kill, I would be dead and gone.<\/p>\n

I scowled and adjusted the strap on my shoulder again as Time Warp blasted through the speakers set up throughout the house. Why I had let Jenna convince me that crashing a stranger\u2019s Halloween party would be fun, I didn\u2019t know, but I was sure as hell regretting it right about now.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d heard about the party from a work friend and with no other plans for the night, she thought it would be a good way for me to meet people in a new city. I was less convinced, but I had spent most of my undergrad program avoiding people and studying law, so what did I know? Now, I was starting over with a new life in a new city, and I was shuffling through a party in a costume I had paid way too much money for years ago.<\/p>\n

Of course, if I\u2019d know how hideously uncomfortable it was going to be, I\u2019d have left it on the shelf. Parties were not my idea of a great night out at the best of times, and this was most definitely not the best of times. I still had a ton of unpacking to do, but somehow I\u2019d found myself dusting off my toga costume and looking for the gold circlet that went around my head, and here I was.<\/p>\n

Of course, as soon as we were inside, Jenna disappeared into the arms of a stranger\u2014gee, thanks\u2014leaving me to go search of a drink and a reason to ditch the party. Why on earth had I let myself get talked into this, anyway? \u201cHi,\u201d a man said, leaning on the counter. He was dressed as a sexy nurse, his toned legs sticking out from beneath a tiny skirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen you around here before. What\u2019s your name?\u201d \u201cEsme,\u201d I said, leaning against the counter and running my eyes over him briefly. Maybe this evening wasn\u2019t a total write-off, after all. I mean, I was here to make friends, right? There was no rule that they couldn\u2019t happen to be ridiculously attractive friends. New city, new me. \u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n
